I am wanting a small sander.I am wanting something
with a 1'' belt.Just to use to sharpen a small blade,
or a few other small projects.
Could youall give me some advice on which one?
Thanks,

God bless,Keith

I never owned one but it seems most guys use the Harbor Freight/Delta type 1" grinders and like them just fine. Or you could get a belt splitter from Tracy and make 1" belts for whatever 2" grinder you already have.

Thanks James,I am looking at the HF,and it is cheap
It also has a lot of good reviews.
Just wanted some advice.

God bless,Keith

Before you buy look at trugrit, supergrit, usaknifemaker etc and be sure you can get the belts you want. Other than that I don't think there's a whole lot of difference between the common ones.

Keith,
I've had my Delta for about 11 years now and it works great.
Can't commit on the HF, but I've not heard anything bad about them either. They are what they are, small and underpowered. But keeping that in mind they work really well for putting an edge on a something or other small jobs.

Belts, I just use whatever HD has on the shelf because this is not a finishing tool to me.

It's nothing great, but I won't get rid of mine:biggrin:

Many people have used the 2x42 craftsman which I "think ?" will run a 1" belt also.

I love my Craftsman, dang sure got my $100 worth out of it and still going strong. Not sure it will run 1" belts though, since the idler wheel has a slight crown to it. Might cause a narrow belt to track weird? I'll cut a belt down later and see how it goes.

Keith,
Look into a 1x42 that's used at golf pro shops. I've seen 2 so far on fleabay recently. I've had mine since 1986 and use it often on handles and sharpening. Strong running machine and I've found/have belts from 60 grit up into 600 grit trizact. It surprises me every time I turn it on that it still runs. All metal, no plastic anything on it. If I can get some cooperation from the queen, I'll post a pic sometime this weekend.

I split used 2" belts in half all the time. Works fine for me.

The primary concern is not the belt width, but the method used to track the belt. There are two methods used- center tracking and coplanar tracking.

Most equipment we run across will use the center tracking method, which means a crowned tracking wheel. A crowned wheel means that the belt will naturally ride towards the high point; a real plus is that now it makes no difference if the belt is 2" or a quarter of an inch, it will self-center with minimum adjustment on our part.

Coplanar tracking is generally reserved for the wider sanders prevalent in woodworking, and certain bandsaws.
In this method, the tracking wheel is completely flat, and the belt (or blade) is tracked properly by adjusting a wheel to be coplanar with the opposite wheel. This requires very fine measurements and adjustments to work properly and takes a lot of time for initial setup, so it is generally only reserved for equipment for which a crowned wheel is not suitable. Think very wide belts- I have used door sanders with 56" wide belts. Or a bandsaw designed to run blades in excess of 1" because a crowned wheel would induce too much stress on the blade, causing premature blade breakage.

Bottom line- if you already have a belt grinder, it probably (but not always) has a crowned wheel. Using narrower belts is simply a matter of splitting the wider belts. So now the bigger concern is belt length, and whether your machine will accommodate that length.

That's good to know. I forgot to try it earlier, got side-tracked with actual work :D

The craftsman is rated for 1" belts also. I've run them on mine with no problems, other than that I like the 2" belts better :)

but it's a brand new Jet.Good woman,but I don't think I could get that much cooperation.

Hi Keith,
I found two yesterday but they were full price. I saw one a few weeks ago start at $40 (used machine). Mine(sander) was waiting patiently by the side of the road for me, I rescued it from trash pick-up, not a thing wrong with it.(almost like the woman):nothing::biggrin:
