Dont now if this has been brang up.
what are the best cartridges to use,now were not talking half/full face just what are the best cartridge.
500,600,700 series, vapor, particle and so on would like to hear from you guys.
The thing is i have been getting bad headacks after grinding, i use a half mask,and the cartridges are old and not
marked so in the market to by some and would not mind spending more for this important of a thing!!!!!
 
I have not been able to use them yet but my next purchase will be the Multi-Vapor cartridges for handle materials and anything I think might have fumes of some sort from boss, I have not had any issues with the P100 filters when grinding steel.
I will keep an eye on this thread, maybe someone will have something more specific to contribute.
 
I believe the ones I have are the P100. They have served me very well for everything I've needed them for this far (steel and phenolic handle material). If you check fleabay, you can often find pretty good deals on half dozen and dozen pair lots.
 
thanks guys, whats the diference between the multi vapor ones wilcox is talking about to the p100 cartrige??
Well at least i now what to look for.
 
The p100 cartridges are a particle cartridge they make a p100 that fits overtop of a vapor type cartridge. Ive been using a charcoal vapor filter with the p100 snapped on overtop.
 
jaysmith were do you get the vapor filter that sounds good ,could take out when grinding steel then use when doing certain handle material.
 
I order my respirator stuff through ORR safety. Thats where all of our safety equipment for work gets ordered from and I get a discount.
 
And to add I would not use just a gas and vapor filter while grinding anything. Those type of filters are not meant to stop particles. Yeah they choke the big stuff back but not the smaller particles.
 
Thank you jaysmith for pointing that out. I had not known that until now, looks like I'll be buying some different filters soon.

Hello Jaysmith,
It may just be a matter of wording / semantics? But aren't gases & vapor smaller than any particles generated by grinding?

I know Micarta releases Formaldehyde "Gases" when ground. So wouldn't a Vapor/Gas rated filter be more efficient? Not less?

The difference between the two filters make up is why ones not good for the other. This is from 3M site,

"Why do I need to use a 3MTM Particulate Filter with my 3MTM Gas & Vapor Cartridges for some applications?
The particulate filter removes the tiny droplets or particles in the air (e.g., mists from spray painting). The gas and vapor cartridges do not filter these particles."

There's a lot of good info on the 3M site. It also talks about different vapor filters for different gases and vapors like formaldehyde.

I never seem to get enough use from the face mask to be able to replace the filters. The head gear seems to bug out far before that.It seems that it streaches out and not back after awhile. Can these be replaced, if so where can i get them at.

I think that the straps are available from the 3m Site. I listed it earlier in this thread.

The particle filters do not remove vapour, but the vapour filters do remove particles if you get the right ones.

There are combo P100 and vapor cartridges like this one.

It will catch the fine dust and the VOC elements (probably activated charcoal ) will reduce your exposure to things like the acetone and epoxy vapours you get on glueup.

There are also cheap disposable prefilters that snap onto the main filter to keep the heavy dust from clogging the cartridge.

3M, North and other companies. have good stuff.
Try visiting a local industrial safety store.
They can fit you with the right size of mask and have the appropriate filters
