I've been watching Nick Wheelers Videos on you tube. this man is amazing his attention to detail is beyond any stretch of the imagination! I can only hope to aspire to this level of craftsmanship. If you have never watched this guy check him out!!

I can't say enough how thankful I am to have discovered knifemaking at this time in history. Guys like Nick who share the skills they learn so freely via forums like this one, youtube, etc have saved me years and years of suffering to learn things through trial and error. It is the most selfless act and I am forever in their debt.

Yep the guy defanitely made it easier to learn how to make knives and lay down a nice hand rubbed finish.
He could have compiled all those videos and sold them on a DVD but instead put them on YouTube to help others learn the craft.

I think one of the grandest things about knife making is the way the experts share their knowledge and skills with the rest of us. Folks like Nick, Calvin, Ed, Bruce.... and many others have so freely shared knowledge it's really amazing. I think that is one of the BIG reasons custom knifes have become so popular, and actually creating a market.

True Ken! I just started doing this and it's really been easy to get info on this subject, via this web site YouTube etc... This website has the best people to ask. All my questions have always been answered, I have never received a "USE THE SEARCH" or "THIS QUESTION HAS BEEN ASKED A MILLION TIMES!!" For a novice trying to get into a hobby that just puts you right off!! I can't thank the people that have helped me enough from this site!!

Gliden actually using the search function is good advise. This site has great advice from seasoned professionals. It may have been given years ago, but it is still good advice. I use the search button all the time. When I get really bored I go to the WIP section and spend an hour or two tooling around. Go there often. But watching Nick Wheeler on you tube is probably more entertaining.

Sometimes the best thing for the informed to do is to point the questioner to the relevant thread or sticky if they know where it is or at least offer the information of where to look which is a far better aproach to the oft asked questions that new makers have in common. Being new they are also not always familiar with the forum and or where to look for the stickied information.

I agree. Not on KD. That is why I have stuck around on this site. One of the best sites out there...not just knife related.

Great points all around.

The search is a good function, but in all honesty it's not always that simple. To get good results on a search you have to speak the language to know which terminology will get you useful information. If you don't know what something is called or commonly referred to you end up searching too broadly or just basically turning up nonsense. In this case a quick post will get you pointed in the right direction. BUT, you probably don't know what you don't know UNTIL you do a search and realize that everything you are pulling up is totally unrelated to what you want to know.

One of the big reasons I landed at KnifeDogs and stayed is because people here are so friendly and patient. Boss tolerates no bull and people here do a great job of policing themselves. So many forums out there are full of condescending jackwagons or self-appointed thread police who believe they should rap your knuckles if your post somehow leads the thread slightly off-topic.
