First Demascus knife

Well against the wishes of my Better half I went to my shop ground out a finished blank and bevels into the piece of Alabama Random pattern Demascus. I was very pleased with the result. I used my Bubble Jig and am Getting the hang of it. Bevels came out nice and clean (my best to date) and the plunge lines came out beautiful thanks to my new carbide file guide!

Looks good Gliden. on your next one you should bring your grind up as high as possible, it will show the Damascus pattern more.
Also, if this is your first Damascus blade...there's somewhat of a learning curve to getting the etch finished to look good, so be ready for it.

I watched a few videos on YouTube one of them by the esteemed Ed Caffrey. I plan on doing it like he says in his video. But I'm sure I'll learn something along the way of what not to do!! LOL!!

Very nice you did a great job. When you buy those billets are they as smooth as Aldos steel?

Never bought steel from Aldo but this stuff is flat and a consistent thickness. This billet was a little thinner than I usually use only .10 figured it was an experiment. I have some 1/4" Old Growth Redwood Burl I plan to use for scales with a 1/16" G10 liner. Should be a good looking knife when it's done? I was gonna use Tru-Oil for a finish. Anybody have any suggtions about finishing the Burl??

Someone told me to sand to at least 1000 grit and apply tung oil and buff with leather. I think Ty might do something like that with his curly maple.

Can you post a picture of your file guide.........I'm not using one of those yet.

I bought the Aluminium one. Very nice quality and reaonable for what these go for. They do make a SS version also.

Gliden07 that's the same file guide I use in the stainless version.
I have never used burl that is not stabilized. I would sand up to at least 1000 grit and use several (10 or more) coats of truoil. Then buff with carnauba wax and a cotton cloth. I'm sure someone with more knowledge will post.

I made my own guide using two pieces of hardened steel. Maybe two inches long by an inch wide.

Drill two holes in them on the ends and use a small bolt and nut to clamp it to your blade. Presto. Cost you nothing, lol.
