Makers mark on steel!

I knew you were using Rhino for your CAD, but hadn't looked at it enough to know it has CNC control build in. Boy, that's an expensive program! I think it might be even more expensive than AutoCAD..... maybe not, it was around $4K/seat, but that was several years ago now I think of it. That's why I like DraftSight..... price wise for hobby use anyway.

Shucks, I had the above all typed up to post, but for some reason it didn't get posted.

Rhino3D is about 1k....the cam module from Mecsoft is about 5k. You can buy Rhino just as a surface modeler...it's terrific...but for me was a steep learning curve.

The cam tool is very easy to learn.

Yea but Ted, $5K is sorta on steep side for a hobby..... especially when LinuxCNC program works so well with such a good support base...... and is FREE!!! There are even some companies using LinuxCNC because it works so well. I never really cared for MACH3, but since it's been completely redone to MACH4 it works really good.

Nope, it's strictly Linux.... The Linux Ubuntu and LinuxCNC are downloaded as a single unit and ran together.

OK, I got the McMaster tool bit yesterday - this is a first run at a couple thou ran at 5 inch/min. Does pretty good. Thanks for the link to McMaster toolbit. That is painted over with a marks-a-lot, then sanded clean with 400 grit dry sandpaper.

That looks pretty good. How deep is that?
What did you do speeds, feeds wise? Was it painfully slow? Lol!

The extra time should be worth not masking etc?

his is a first run at a couple thou ran at 5 inch/min.
As I mentioned above, it is a couple thou deep, and ran at 5 in/min speed. Nope, not painfully slow - I'll still do a combination of electro-etching and sometimes I'll use CNC, all depending on what I'm needing at the time.

As I mentioned above
Duh...read it..got excited by the pic and blanked out...LOL!
It looks good...and having options is always good!

I wanted mine to look like stamping so I'm doing many passes. I have been running plastic parts for the military for about 8 years...anything steel feels painfully slow...
