White Tail Antler

Hi Guys,
I have a question for you Slip Joint experts. Has anyone used any deer antler for handle material on a slip joint? If so, how did it work out? I ask because I was looking for some scale material this week and saw a lot of Red Stag and Sambar Stag, which made me wonder why I can't recall ever seeing a pocket knife described as having white tail deer scales.

I've been using deer antler for everything from pens to rings to hunting knives for 15+ years and love the look and feel of it. Oh well...maybe I'm just going thru a mid life crisis.

Now that you mention it, I don't recall every seeing a slip joint with what was described as whitetail antler!! By just using the outside of the antler, you should be free of the pith in the middle of whitetail antler!!

Now I am anxious to hear others respond to this question!!

Perhaps because it some states it's not legal to sell white tail deer antler..... Alabama for one. I don't remember all the details, but you can check the dept of fish 'n game in the state that's of interest.

That is interesting. I have never heard, nor considered the possible legal implications of using a natural material for knife scales. I've used white tail sheds in my hunter/skinner knives, as well as writing instruments I've made for a number of years. I guess I now have some research to do. Thanks for the information that could save me some serious problems down the road.

I have seen some awesome folders made by Jim Schmidt that have antler handle scales. but I am not sure exactly what animal they were from. Dan
