Was perusing eBay tonight and run across this!!! Here is the link, http://www.ebaystores.com/Metalcraf...mit=Search&_sacat=Metalcraftusa&_sid=74400444

I have heard that there was some company in the UK that was actually making new wrought, but you had to purchase in the multiple tons to get an order and shipping to the US would be crazy! Not sure there is any truth to that either!!

So what say you! Is this true wrought iron or a carefully worded drag you in scam?? It states it is hot rolled!

I guess it depends on what you want to use it for. I remember reading an article on forging the old wrought iron and aside from historical accuracy I would rather forge modern steel. I cannot remember details from the article but I remember that it is harder to forge weld and I remember thinking well, no need to search out wrought any more. I am curious though if you get some and work it please let me know if it has layers like the old wrought I am curious.

Most of the time this is just hot rolled material. It's called wrought fabrication stock because it's most commonly used in decorative hand rail. Sometimes called wrought iron railing.

That is what I afraid of. There are fabricating in our area old style wrought, using New Orleans area, often as a pattern! However it is nothing but mild steel welded in a pattern that looks like the old wrought iron fences, etc., etc..

IMO anyone selling anything but true wrought, ought to label it, "wrought iron style"! That would let you know it is not the real thing!!

I have never been able to confirm that somebody is making wrought in the UK. So beginning to go with first instinct!

EDIT: So as soon as I signed out of this thread I did a search and here is what I found!!

What sets off alarm bells for me is that describe the product as mild steel wrought iron. So is it mild steel or wrought iron? It can't be both; their different critters.

They call them selves Wrought Iron Handicrafts, Inc.! I could call myself Colonel Sanders, but that doesn't mean I know anything about fried chicken!

ON another note I just went back to the link for the real wrought made in the UK , https://www.realwroughtiron.com/

If you chase it down far enough you get to the prices, https://www.realwroughtiron.com/wp-...ught-Iron-Prices-as-at-16th-November-2016.pdf

Then I noticed this, are costs are quoted in Pounds Sterling, payment is too be made in Sterling

So this ole country boy has never been across the pond, so I had to look up the meaning of that!! When I searched for payment is too be made in Sterling, this pops up! https://www.cardfellow.com/credit-card-processors/sterling-payment-technologies

Some how I get the feeling that the cost of shipping would be prohibitive for an order to the states!!:oops::p

I will have to talk to the new guy Robert about this one!!

The Real Wrought Iron Company is the sole world supplier of genuine wrought iron.

We can confirm that puddled wrought iron is indeed available, rolled to any size you like, in large or small batches as needed. It is hot rolled from Admiralty specification heavy mooring chain, and is of a quality which surpasses the needs of smiths making architectural work.
The Real Wrought Iron Company is as far as we know the sole world supplier of genuine wrought iron. We supply to blacksmiths throughout the world, for use in the restoration of historic ironwork and the construction of high quality architectural ironwork commissions.
We recycle and re-roll genuine wrought iron into various standard and bespoke sections on our traditional rolling mills.
Established over 30 years ago by Chris Topp, we believe we are the only supplier of this wonderful material nowadays, and the craftsmen working at our sister company Topp & Co. are experts in its use. We source our genuine wrought iron from all over the country and are always looking to buy genuine wrought iron. We hope this site acts as a useful guide for both the services we offer and also answer any queries you might have about wrought iron as a material.
Wrought iron is a different material to pure iron and steel and has vastly different properties.
This material is completely different to pure iron, owing to the presence within the matrix of the iron, of up to 5% of silicate slags, distributed throughout the section as fibres. It is these slag fibres which give wrought irons their unique properties, including superb weldability ( in the fire) and resistance to corrosion.
We would be very happy to expand upon the unique and superior properties of wrought iron, if you are interested. Suffice to say, that no refined modern metal can be regarded as a substitute, unless of course someone comes up with one containing the slag fibres! As regards costs, these are comparable with any small production ferrous alloy, and sit somewhere between those of stainless steels and the cheaper bronzes.

You might also check high temp tools and refractory. I know they sell wrought iron. Can't remember the price off the top of my head.

Wow I don't remember it being that expensive the last time I looked.

I don't think a knifemaker can have enough of anything!

Look at the very last definition and my statement, " I have enough wrought for now but, you never know about the future!! Having enough is a relative thing!!!" it becomes more apparent exactly what I was trying to say!! Side splitting laughter.jpg
