    First forge questions

A firebrick is perfect. If you work at a plumbing/HVAC shop, they probably have a couple laying around you could have.

    Bearing replacement on old lathe

I couldn’t get a picture to load, but I’ve got it stripped down, and now I have to get a hundred years worth of old paint and goop off so I can repaint it. I stripped the entire threading assembly off, since I cannot think of any reason I could need it. I’ve found bronze bearing the correct size...

    Mirror Finish?

That sanding all has to be done with a sanding block too. No wrapping it on your fingertip and just sanding that stubborn scratch out. Karl said it, you can tell a mirror finish that was sanded vs buffed. These do put a shine on stuff quick, I’ve seen the results. They’re pretty neat, but you...

    Canister Bird and Trout

That is kinda cool. I’ve never seen canister with large ball bearings in it before. Makes me wonder what one with a bunch of different sizes would look like. Pretty stag on that too.

Anyone Here Fabricate or Use Aluminum Tart/Pot Pie Pans for Custom Cookware?

I see Emma’s listed as “banned”. I kinda wonder if that was even a real person. Posts would be made with questions like this, and there was never a response to any replies. Kind of weird questions too, only very loosely related to what we do. Struck me as bot-like maybe.

Any simple way to guess steel type?

You might be able to get an idea of what it might be, by looking at what its current use is. I know a lot of forklift tines are 4140, and that hardens up pretty good.

    forge construction question

Everything is salvageable if you try hard enough :) . I’ve only used kastolite a couple times, but I mixed water in till it was “right”, didn’t follow the directions. Once you pour it, just low fire it for a couple hours to dry it before you really send it. Might be better off just breaking it...

    Are these real ???

Yeah, that’s real. Real old too. Nice find.

    Help me ID this wood

A long time ago I got some desert ironwood logs, it looks a lot like that. That was probably about 30 years ago, so my memory may not be accurate. It’s got a distinct smell, have you cut any? What does it smell like?

Looking for help identifying this knife

I don’t know anything about it, but it is a very unique knife! I’m interested to see if anyone else has info on it.

    Etching Damascus

I used hydrochoric acid years ago, but ferric Chloride seems to give a better etch. The hydrochloric seems like it etches both steels together. That was full strength, perhaps if it was diluted it would be different. I suspect that if there was something “better” than FC, we would have heard...

    New tariff impact on materials

Not really a concern for me I guess, but I don’t do enough knives right now for it to be an issue.

    Whetstones

Are they waterstones? Those should be soaked for a bit, it helps break down the stone so it will abrade the steel better. If you don’t, the surface of the stone will tend to “gloss over” for lack of better term. It will give a smoother edge, which could be what you’re experiencing. The stones...

ultrex suretouch - how stain resistant

I ate a lot of squirrel when I was younger. I think it was because we were poor or something. I like it. If that stuff is anything like regular G10, I doubt anything will stain it.
