New Disk grinder

Got the disk from a friend (he never used it) it has a 1 Degree bevel, I had the 3/8" plate I made the frame with, another friend of mine blew out the hole on the frame to mount the 56C motor which was another freebie (3ph multi tap motor), bought a tool stand from HF ($30) a cheapie VFD off of Ebay if I remember $38 and a repurposed leg off a smoker for the VFD bracket? Need to get some 12/3 Rubber cord a few connectors couple boxes a plug snd a little paint. Guessing 100ish bucks total?? Been collecting the pieces and parts for a few months now. Compared to 800 to 1500 for a prebuilt think I did ok? What do you guys think??

I'm envious! I'm going to start doing some scrounging of my own for a disc grinder. I like the way you mounted the VFD

All looking good and you went exactly the same route as I am as I have had a 1 degree disc made, just need to save the cash for the motor and inverter.
 
Gliden, You will need to either put the VFD in a grindings free room or put the VFD in an enclosure with a filtered vents and a fan to protect the VFD from the metal grindings. The VFD has a fan in it to draw cooling air inside it. Of course, this will also suck the metal grindings in and cause it to short out. Also the motor is not TEFC (Totally Enclosed Fan Cooled) and will suffer the same fate.
I can supply you with a wiring kit either 115v or 230v, which includes an 8' molded power cord, 2' of 4 conductor cable, cable connectors, wire nuts and my 1 page wiring instructions for wiring the motor and VFD and setting up a KBAC VFD.

The VFD is definitely not the quality of my KBAC27. It will be good until I smoke it or get enough cash to buy another KBAC. As far as the motor goes if it works a day it didn't cost me a thing. And it actually provided me with the raw material to get this built 56C frame TEFC motor is just a phone call away! I've found with this hobby spending money on equipment isn't an issue that's for sure!!
 
Since you already have a KBAC27 I'll tell you what I did. I took the output from the vfd and wired it into a 4 prong dryer outlet. Then I got 2 4 prong dryer cords and wired them into my motors for my grinder and my disc grinder...Now when I want to use one or the other I just plug them into the outlet and I can use my 1 vfd for both.
 
AND..... I saved myself some $$$ by learning how to wire two motors into a single VFD! There are some very specific rules that must be followed....such as the two (or with this method you could wire in as many as 4 motors) MUST BE THE EXACT SIZE/TYPE/CURRENT/AMP OF MOTOR. I wired two 3hp lesson motors into a single KBAC-29D..... here's a link to a page on my site that explains/shows how to do it.

The extra cords/plugs as mentioned above...... is as foolproof as it gets..... the only down side there is the extra $$ for power cord and plugs.... if you're not careful, you can spend a lot of $$ on 220V plugs.

If you'll put some filters over the air inlets on that VFD you'll be surprised how many years it will last. Here's a thread I started showing how I did the filter. With this setup I'd expect many years of use from that cheap VFD - $38? That is a REALLY good price.

I have to recant the 38 it was 48 I pulled my receipt out for it. Still was a good price. That's really why I bought it. I didnt have a use for it when I got it! LOL!!
 
Well had a few hours to kill today. Finished putting Disk Grinder together. Running now but need to put a light or 2 on it, get a rubber backer from Boss. The cheapo VFD works good as does the motor but I will be replacing as I can. Neither the motor or VFD are sealed. But in the meantime I have a functional tool that I have to learn. LOL!! Everything was free or recycled except the VFD that was 50ish dollars, tool stand is a HF that was 30ish bucks, Electrics and misc. parts n pieces another 30 bucks so $110 + or minus a few dollars.
