This works better than calipers or just about anything else. It has a sharp carbide bit that works well pre or post heat treat: http://www.grizzly.com/products/Dial-Height-Gauge-6-/G9618

With any material that you use, make sure you grind/cut it as cool as possible and don't use water to cool it. Paper micarta, Corian and the reconstituted stuff that MaseCraft sells is great for a reffule.

Camaro, I bought a GIB first and still ended up with a KMG. Unless you're great with your hands and have machining experience, your grinder will suffer greatly. After it was all said and done, even scavenging pieces, I ended paying more than I would have through a KMG. I suggest that you buy...
