Anybody ever made a knife steel?

I think he is talking about making a knife steel such as the ones used by chefs when realigning the edge on a knife. :D

    Christmas

Right on the money Teddy. I've disliked the negative pressure to consume and partake in gluttony that this season brings out in many of us. I try and guide my family toward a spiritual and meaningful holiday. I even got rid of cable this year to try and combat the ad bombardment that is so...

How thin of steel can I hollow grind?

Timy, it all depends on your skill lever. By the Grace of God, I've been grinding razors down to .005 on a 2" wheel and they have been fine. You can use this calculator to give you some idea of what a grind will look like. http://bimjo.com/free/widget.html

    52100

I've been doing as such and have not seen any issues. Just make sure you also take into account that they will come down to black heat slower.

    Yikes, 52100 Question!

Thank you again Mr. Cashen. Following your advice and Darrin's yielded better results. Without addressing the issue of its spheroidized state the blades were coming out of the quench "soft." I took my first blade and broke it and it deformed quite a bit before breaking and had visible grain...

    Yikes, 52100 Question!

Thank you Mr. Cashen for your response. I appreciate that you take the time out of your undoubtedly busy schedule to address questions at this "level." My source for 52100 is Aldo and the blades have been ground but have been left very thick... around .050 or so. Hopefully this leaves some room...

    Yikes, 52100 Question!

So, I'm trying my hand at heat treating 52100 tonight and would like some advice on a heat treating schedule. I have LN2, Paragon HT Oven, ATP 641 and Maxim's Medium speed oil (the name escapes me). I'm trying to get the max out of the steel for a run of straight razors that need to be done ASAP...

    LN2 Dewar

Having purchased an HT Oven, I'm now in the market for an LN2 dewar but have no clue as where to start. I'd like to keep the cost reasonable but also do understand this to be an investment. Other than a large "mouth," what should I look for in a dewar? What size would you recommend? Are...

    Got a New Toy!

Just wanted to share my joy with you guys, as I picked up a new heat treating oven from Paragon today! Specs you say? Chamber Volume: 0.89 Cu Ft. Width: 13" Depth: 13.5" Height: 8.75" and gets up to 2000 ... which sounds a little big and on the cool side but at the price I paid, it sure made...
