what do you use to finish hardwoods ?

If the wood is not stabilized I usually do several coats of CA as sealer. Hand sand (400 - 600 grit then 0000 steel wool) to level it out then buff. If it's a stabilized wood, buff with pink then white compound. I've found that if I use a stabilized wood that has an open grain structure like...

    Pass around!!!

Mya Knives, Franklin There is a lot to like about this knife. Very functional blade shape and design. Nicely executed bolsters, especially for a first attempt. The only con’s I could really see are more a difference of opinion as a maker than a flaw in the knife itself. Personally, I found the...

I got my first 2x72 but

Like has been said before, practice. Buy as much 1095 (or similar) steel and start making knives. On belts, act like they are free (believe me I know they are not) use new ones to start your bevels with, once they become worn save them for shaping handles with, profiling, ect.... The best way...

    Thoughts on tapered tang

To hollow out the handle end on a tapered tang, could you use the Boss's small wheel holder and a 1 inch wheel? I've been wanting to try a tapered tang and read the tutorial by John Barker. Since I already have the small wheel holder and a 1 inch wheel, I was going to give it a try with what I...

    Is brass outdated?

For me, and strictly my opinion, it all depends on two things. 1) What type of knife is it going on. 2) Who is my target buyer I've only been making knives for a few years and I've not posted pictures of my work because it wasn't where I wanted it to be. But that is changing, they are getting...

    Pass around!!!

Waiting to get your knife, anticipation is killing me. I'll be sure to take plenty of action shot when it gets here. And give a review in a timely fashion. Another question and it's not meant to hi-jack your thread. Who else besides Wade, Matt and Franklin are knife makers? John

New full tang axe work in progress (The Huntsman)

New full tang axe work in progress (The Huntsman)

If you put a spike on that it would be one mean wreckin' machine. I would be all over that as a 'hawk. For it's intended purpose, looks like a rock solid design.

    Weather

Ok guy's I'm just going to chalk this up to "youthful" enthusiasm or mental illness. Quench bucket frozen solid, ground two knives and had a blade shaped impression filled with melt water from laying it on the ice to cool off. Had frost on the outside of my respirator and couldn't feel my...

    Question about wood handle material.

Hello everyone, I just got some new handle material that I've never worked with before. What is the best way/your method to finish Kingwood and cocobolo? From my research, both are in the rosewood family and should be very oily and not need stabilization. So would a CA finish or Teak/Tung/Tru...

    A little help here please!

If you are just sending in a few pieces for clear stabilization, should be about 2 weeks. I would call them and ask what their turn around time is running like right now.
