One year review of my 12 ton forge press

Good morning, Chris. How about the other dimension? (I would have called this the wide one...) I'm guessing 1 1/2"? I made my combo dies out of 2" square, and often use the flat dies to draw out the billet. After watching their videos, I'm questioning if the 12 ton would be able to...

    Canister Damascus

Good morning, Chris. Would you be willing to give a more detailed review? Have you found the limits of the 12-ton's squishing ability? I'm considering moving, and that would force me to purchase a new press.

    When pins get hot

IMO, aluminum looks different than stainless or nickel though, so doesn't work if either is part of the handle.

    When pins get hot

When I used to use files, I never noticed pins warming up. Overheating is almost never an issue (no matter what tool you use) as long as you're not overly concerned about how fast you're removing the excess material.

    What am I doing wrong?

This was my thoughts as well. FYI- If you are purposefully heating your Parks50 to 100F prior to quenching, you are wasting some time. Parks50 spec sheet says it's working temp range is ambient/room temp to 120F.

Quench Tank Build - WIP - Does this make sense?

Bummer that yours came in a plastic bucket. I wonder if they all do, or if the place I got mine from re-packaged it...

Quench Tank Build - WIP - Does this make sense?

Looks good, Bob, but are you splitting the 5 gal with someone or is there another reason not to use the 5 gal? My 5 gal Parks50 came in a steel bucket with a removable lid and that's my quench tank.

Not funny to me April fools

This has been going around. I last ordered from them more than a few months ago and have gotten about 1 e-mail a month in my spam folder asking me to approve some PO#. I never noticed the April Fools addendum, though.

First Knife Order - need a few opinions please

I'm sure this is true, but don't lose sight of the fact that in your IT experience, the customer most likely had a few other companies to choose from, so playing 'the game' was important. I'm not sure how much I'd worry about that here, because if you don't make it, what other options does he have?

What to do with my 84 layer billet?

The typical set-up is, cut or drill 1/3 way through the billet on each side, staggering your cuts/drill holes. Make sure you chamfer the corners before final forging to minimize/avoid cold-shuts (the red). I showed 2 different options for the chamfering. Don't forget to consider how the...

So is that commercially available? Where? When I lived in WA, I had a source (my best friend was a machinist for Boeing), but he retired a ew years ago, I moved, and now I'm all out.

What's going on in your shop?

Hello all. I finally decided to spend the money on a TIG setup for prepping pattern welded billets without adding any outside metals, so I had to teach myself how to use it. Here's a picture of 5 pieces of 15N20 ground clean, TIG welded around the perimeter and ready to forge weld into a solid...

    Easy and cheap file handles

Me too. And not as comfortable as the golf balls, either, IMO. I just don't know where to get them free anymore....but I haven't looked in a while. It's been about 35 years since I golfed regularly, are there any golf balls the have liquid cores with rubber bands anymore? Or all they all...

    Need some leather working advice.

This has been mentioned elsewhere, but I'll emphasize the suggestion on using your drill press for the holes after using your stitching wheel or fork to layout the holes. But instead of a small drill bit, which will remove leather, just chuck a larger sized stitching needle in your drill press...
