Anybody ever used electric sanders for flats?

I have a cheap 1/4 sheet sander I attempted to use on 1 knife. I didn't modify it, clamped in in my vise ans ran the knife over it. I felt it gave the blade an interesting look that might be suitable as a different finish to leave as is. Not sure how to describe it, maybe a satin or bead look...

    My Cheap Craftsman Belt Grinder

I am actually using a HF 1 x 30 right now and have been thinking about "upgrading" to the Craftsman. Trying to decide on that as a next step or waiting on a build when I have more funds (may do both). I'd like to find 1 of the older ones with the 1/2 hp motor, I have been a little leery of the...

    Experiment gone Right (?)

Thanks. My leather work has been limited to 2 sheaths so far. I bought a scrap bag from http://springfieldleather.com/ just to start with and there are some piece too thick to use for sheaths, I think might work as scales. I was also wondering if the thin stuff could be layered. I have seen...

    Experiment gone Right (?)

Also like the scales on that one. I also have small leather piece I would love to make scales with. I have only used min wax wood hardener to stabilize a set of wood scales. Can you share any details on stabilizing the leather? Are there multiple layers on each scale?

1st Antlered Handled WIP - with questions

I think the narrow belt is definitely a challenge. I would love to buy or build a 2 x 72 but not in the cards right now. I am debating on the craftsman 2 x 42. Even with its flaws my dad's reaction when he got it was priceless so I can relate to your story. BTW I love the looks of your...

Double guard and framed handle, rear bolsters too

Great WIP! Lots of tips and tricks for a new guy to learn here. As a new guy I have what is probably a real rookie question. This is the first frame handled assembly I have seen. Other than allowing for the bolsters of the style you used, what is the benefit of the tapered tang with wrap around...

1st Antlered Handled WIP - with questions

I have finished up. I did add a but cap. I don't recall seeing info on how to do this, so I improvised. I use 1/4" x 1" mild steel. I made a tang of sorts using 1/8" x 1/2" by creating a mortise and tennon joint I peened together. I used the rotary tool to route out the butt and...

1st Antlered Handled WIP - with questions

I attempted to grind free hand using only a mild steel guide as an aid for my plunge line. Currently using a HF 1x30 sander. I have made a "practice" knife or two with the sander, but this is also my first knife to finish on a sander, I started with files. I later removed the table as it just...

1st Antlered Handled WIP - with questions

I thought I'd document my process here for my first hidden tang knife. This is more so for my benefit, but perhaps it may help another new maker. This knife is almost finished and ready to be delivered to my father as a Christmas present. I started this project because he gave me a set of...

220V Kiln Plug N Play Digital Controller wiring

I have a manual controlled kiln and am ready to upgrade to digital. Actually have 2, my wife does pottery and we both want to go digital. I have been reading here and elsewhere on wiring but still not quite ready to break into to the kilns current wiring to tie in the PID and SSR's. I am also...

Tong Styles - What does or Could work best for forging knives?

John I am making my own and that die is definitely an efficient tool - if I only had the power hammer to go with is, I'd be all set : ) . I do have a friend that forges his by hand and made up a little jig for bending the off sets. I have considered doing the same. Do you think your jig, or a...

    Antler scales / handles ???'s

If they had been cut low enough at the base I would have done something very similar, but he cut them too high. I am interested in trying this latter though. I have yet to do a hidden tang. With the curve of most antlers I am assuming the tang is only 1/2 or so the length of the handle? If the...

    Antler scales / handles ???'s

OK, so I have been planning to try my hand at making a knife using whitetail antler as the handle or as scales for a full tang. I was telling my dad about this and he gave me a set from a buck he killed a few years. Long story short, I want to make him a knife using them for Christmas. They...
