I'm using 440c with the green solution for stainless that USAknifemaker sales. I've tried using felt from Wal-Mart, pieces of sock and folded shop rags. The felt works the best. Thinking of just buying a new etcher but hate to get one and it do the same thing.

I do DC then AC. I only have the problem with stainless. I get good etching on carbon steel. I've tried various hold ways, swiping and holding the pad for different times. I've even tried the Windex trick and different types of pads. Wondering if my etcher is under powered for stainless.

I'm having a hard time getting a dark etch on stainless. I made my etcher from plans online (can't remember were I got them). I'm using Ernies stencils and the green stainless solution. I cleaned all my contact areas and have good ground. I get good etching on non stainless. Any ideas.

I actually have three 440c knives in the oven now. I just picked up a few lbs of dry ice and will be trying cryogenic for the first time.

Ok thanks, sounds like ill get it. Running out of room in my shop but it should be worth it. It's pretty small.

yeah, I'm doing three or four at a time so I'm kind of on the fence. I can definitely see using it for 20 blades. Thanks for the comments, sounds like it would be best used just to knock out a big run of the same model.

I have a opportunity to get a great deal on a unimat metal lathe. I can get it for free but will need to buy a chuck and tooling. Do you think it would be worth getting? I only made one folder but will make more in the future. Would this be a useful lathe for folders or would something bigger...

I've been hearing a lot of good things about AEB-L. I want to pick one stainless to work with for now was thinking about cm154 but AEB may be a better choice for my experience level.

I did change the geometry on another knife and got better results, not great but better. To snap temper, would I temper at 250 for 1 hour? I have a fluke ir temp gun to check temps on the blade and when I pull the blade out of the oven and immediately check the temp it reads in the 150 degree...

I'm using 440c. I'm happy with the results of quenching with the plates but doing 4-6 blade at a time means I'll need more or bigger plates. I guess I could quench the plates in between the knives. I was really wondering if just doing a quick dip in water or oil while still in the pouch would...

Thanks Ed, that makes since about the flat grind. The knife I tested was a full flat ground blade and fairly thin. I'm glad to know that 440c is normally chippy because even when I increased the tempering temp it still chipped and has not so great edge retention.

Just curios what your thoughts on water or oil quenching air hardening steels in the air/water tight pouch. Does stainless benefit from rapid cooling? I'm sure there is a reason not to do it but I do not have the knowledge to know. I know it wouldn't cool oil hardening steels fast enough but not...
