    Guard making question...

I would glue the handle on at that point and finish it out. Looks pretty close just some rounding and smoothing up but I like to blend with the handle when I'm doing that.

If you don't like the weather in Kentucky

Bring on all that snow, I'd be in a tractor working. Can't excavate when it's too frozen or muddy but I can push snow. The problem is we don't get that much and so much of it is ice so winter doesn't leaves a lot of days of equipment sitting idol. More time to make knives though.

If you don't like the weather in Kentucky

Don't know what it got to but supposably 63 in Louisville not. Supposed to be in the low 50's in the morning and drop all day. Back in the 20's tomorrow night and high's in the 30's on Sunday. Supposed to be nice next week though, mid 40's and sunny every day. I'm hoping to get out of the shop...

    Contact wheel outside edge radius?

Usually the first thing I do when breaking out a new 60 grit is take a couple swipes on the tang to break the edge over before I start on the blade. The other belts are flexible enough without purposely doing this.

Does anybody else run anything longer than a 72 inch grinding belt?

I'm not sure about all suppliers but it has always seemed a little cheaper, I checked my most recent invoice and it does figure up less. More on some belts than others. The big thing you have to watch out for is the places that carry the 132 belts are industrial supply that don't always have...

If you don't like the weather in Kentucky

Just wait a few minutes. We've had a long freezing spell and everything has been under a layer of ice for most of December and now that the new year is here it's supposed to be in sunny and in the forty's next week. I just woke up and it warmed up through the night. Its 55 degrees right now and...

Does anybody else run anything longer than a 72 inch grinding belt?

It might be more trouble than it's worth to modify one, I don't know, but if building one from scratch it seems more people would go that route. I bet most people don't realize the options out there and since knifemaking supply and knifemaking in general has adopted the 72 everyone follows the...

Does anybody else run anything longer than a 72 inch grinding belt?

The other thread on belt seems got me wondering why knifemakers all run 72 inch belts. I buy the 132 for less per inch than the 72, I'm told the reason is the seem is a larger part of the cost. Besides that the 132 belts seem to last probably three times longer even though they are less than...

Why can't they make a seemless finishing belt !

I'm told the seem is a large part of the cost which is why the 132 belts are not that much more than the 72 from my supplier. I wouldn't have thought the tape was the big cost but time cutting and putting the belt together. As for the original question I wish they would come up with a seamless...

    Contact wheel outside edge radius?

I've never found the need to do it either but if I was going to I would put it on a lathe.

    inexpensive band saw?

I've got an old saw like that I've had for probably twenty years. They don't track the greatest and the little table on them isn't great for vertical work but they are very good for what they are. It was the only metal saw that could be used vertical that I had when I started knifemaking so I...

    end mill cutter

It still puts side load on the quill and bearings if only one side of the cutter is cutting. You have to drill a hole to keep a straight load on it. It would be the better way though, I do it that way with a milling machine when cutting a large slot in thick material.

    Contact wheels ? (poll)

I use an 8 for almost everything, even big knives.

Is there any part of your knifemaking that you consider trade secrets.

No secrets in knifemaking that I know of. VERY MUCH different than when I was in pulling sports. Lot's of secrets in racing.

    Bandsaw Blades for Handle Materials

That is pretty fast to cut G10 and Micarta. I use my Jet wood bandsaw on it's slowest speed for cutting G10 and Micarta (actually all my handle materials). I use a 10 tpi bi-metal blade for my handle material. G10 will eat a wood blade. Edit, you need a saw that you can slow the speed down on...

    How to finish?

Any of the top coats will work. Depends on the look I want but I use Bag-Kote most of the time. I like the soft look you get with it.
