More winter weather on the way for us

I hate ice! Just came in from feeding, I'd take 2 foot of snow any day over this stuff. Everything you touch is frozen up, have to carry a propane torch around to get gates and doors open. You tear the weatherstripping off the doors of any tractor that hasn't been sitting in the barn and the...

More winter weather on the way for us

We haven't got near what they said. Thin layer of ice over the snow, my small lab walks on it without falling through but my male is cracking through it. He sounds like a horse when he's running.

More winter weather on the way for us

Do you guys have much snow Sean? We only have about 3-4 inches laying around on average. Some places deeper from the drifting and some places pretty much bare. The ice will crunch up if on top of snow but where we have been driving it's all packed and the roads are pretty much clear so it's...

More winter weather on the way for us

Temps are back up in the twenty's and we have freezing rain, with some sleet and snow on top of it on the way. Kids probably won't have school tomorrow if we get what they are saying. Will be lucky to walk out there tomorrow, driving will be slow going. When the temps stay close to the...

    grinder question-

Ed is right on, it messes with your wheels and the belt but it won't hurt the spring. A common misconception is that a spring will weaken if left compressed. It won't. A spring can weaken from being worked or over compressed but not just sitting there under a normal load.

    It's Getting Chilly Up Here

I agree, it's 7 here and about -2 windchill and I hate to do outdoor plumbing this time of year. How do they dig up north this time of year? The ground gets frozen pretty deep here at times. I was told they use heat blankets to warm the ground up for digging graves and things that can't wait...

Putting Maker's Mark on Etched Damascus Blade

I'm thinking about getting a stamp for damascus. If it is a dark etched blade you can sometimes do your mark a deep etch and leave the mark light and it looks pretty good.

we are hunkered down herre - ice yesterday, blizzard today...

Winter has hit us about a month early it seems. We'll get cold snaps but usually don't get the long spells where it stays below freezing until after the first of the year. Two weeks ago it was in the 60's and the next day turned off cold and snowing and stayed that way all last week. Got above...

Heat Treating in Evansville, IN or Louisville, KY

Gil Hibben has done some heat treating for folks when doing his own. I do a lot of my heat treating over at his shop and sometimes he has had other peoples blades in with ours. You may contact Gil and ask if he will do the O1 for you since it obviously can't go in with our stainless blades...

    Dust collection?

I've got one of the 3 micron bags on mine and it still escapes it. Fine dust will fog the area. You can build a water pre filter and catch a lot of it. I have mine in one of those little plastic sheds you can buy at Lowes and places. It was a little damaged and got it for under 100 bucks.

    Dust collection?

I also have one of the Grizzly bag type collectors and it sits in a little shed outside the shop. I can turn it on from inside my grinding room of the shop. If you have it sitting in the shop you'll be amazed at the amount of fine dust that escapes the bags and as was said it's noisy. Even the...

    Advice from CPM154 guys!

It's not much different than ATS 34 to work. After HT it's a little harder to work than ATS 34. If you think your having a hard time now wait until it's heat treated. I learned to make knives with stainless, when I grind carbon steels or Damascus it's like grinding wood.

    Water Buffalo Horn

I actually like working with it but since I've had it shrink and crack before I tend to steer clear of it. I will only use it under certain circumstances and I warn the customer of the possibility of it doing silly things. I wish it could be stabilized but I've been told it cant be. If you cant...

Now that it will be available to everyone I predict the Carpenter CTS steel will be the new rave of the custom knife world like the CPM steels have been recently. Unless we hijack the truck and keep it for ourselves:les...

I still use paypal more than I take credit cards. It's a shame Gpal has had so much trouble getting things ironed out since they could be a good thing.

    Carpenter XHP

I've gotten mine direct from Carpenter and been exchanging info with their metallurgist. The problem has been they don't want to distribute small amounts and an entire mill run is three lifetime supplies for most custom makers. The distribution problem has been solved as SB Specialty metals...

There's not a thing wrong with 440C if it's all you ever use. My personal favorite hunting knife is 440C as well as all my kitchen knives and the knives we use to butcher deer.
