    Sword Steel ???/

I use 1075 and 15n20 or 1075 and w2. I will use 80crv2 and 1075 and 15n20 in the future. I know, you don't pattern weld. You should pick any of those steels (except w2, which I use for edge-holding but never the whole body of the sword). Probably, you can't get 15n20 in thick stock (unless...

800 layer, pweld, 15n20 and 1075 hunter. Koa, superglue finish. 9.13" oal

thanks Bubba. I know exactly what you mean. Lots of copper on Chinese stuff. Learned to work it and brass trying that stuff, and now I love to use copper. Not as much practice or ability as you have with it, but it is fun. Maybe shakudo and shibuichi if I can get a little better.

800 layer, pweld, 15n20 and 1075 hunter. Koa, superglue finish. 9.13" oal

Hello Everyone, I have a hunter with 800 layers of random laminate. It is made from 15n20 and 1075. The fittings are copper, wrought iron, and mild steel. The wood is koa with a superglue finish, followed by Ren Wax. The blade is just under 5" long, and the handle is over 4". The blade is...

    More marquenching questions

thanks. just thanks. Your Ashokan demonstrations have helped me a ton with straightening swords before they fully harden and retain the set. It is a wonderful thing to be able to do (it seems to take about 9-10 seconds for a clayed blade to reach appropriate temp in my Parks 50 tank). A little...

    The Neo-Tribal Metalsmith Art Movement

Alexander Weygers, in The Complete Modern Blacksmith (and the other books that is a compilation of) wrote of the kinship he felt with smiths in Laos and Africa. He worked in the modern world and had a machinist's training. He even patented a propulsion system. But, in the end, he moved to rural...

    Turning a natural cork handle

that is pretty cool, Tai! hey, do you think it will still float when it is finished (a little bobbing knife if you drop it overboard would be a lot better than waiting for The Lady in the Lake to bring it back to you).

    1075 durability

normalize very well, with descending heats. You want to have a very fine grain. 1075 will make a great hawk. If you can get Aldo's 80crv2 in the right size to start from, it would probably be a little tougher. But the most important point will be the heat treatment, not the steel. You could chop...

"we are all searching for our identities. This is the way of the artist." Tai - regardless of whether anyone reads or judges any of the rest of this discourse (though I have followed and I am pretty sure I understand the respective points and positions), that last statement is a resonating...

    Professor's forge

Hello Everyone, I finally have a website that I can let the rest of y'all see (although I must admit that I find the whole process sort of embarrassing). I have put a lot of work into this, and it will continue to grow and evolve. There will be information and a lot of process pictures showing...

    The Neo-Tribal Metalsmith Art Movement

well, I am, "in," if we decide to go forward. earlier in this thread there was talk of NeoTribal being more about process than particular design, though. If y'all wanna make Brutes then we will make Brutes. No one said anything about getting a common website... does that mean the idea is not a...

    The Neo-Tribal Metalsmith Art Movement

Tim - I like the idea of professional photos and group of examples. I don't know if we should limit it to one style of knife, but if everyone (or most everyone) else thinks we should then I am ok with that, too. I would like to submit, once I finish it, a 25" dao I have that needs polish and...

    seax with a story

Hello Everyone, This is a 10" blade in the broken-back style, with a bit of Owen Bush's styling (the, "Kentish Notch"). The steel is Aldo's 1075 and 15n20. It has about 400 layers. Handle is walnut. This blade has a story. A couple of years ago, Mannlicher asked me to make a seax for...
