    Why do we do this?

The injury list is long for a lot of us who like to make things and fix stuff .. I work with my hands in both my real job and my knifemaking . There is not a week that goes by that I don't have some sort of hand injury or getting wacked somehow or somewhere . It all in good fun though.

Quench oil that is too fast for a given steel?

Yes Kevin thank you .. I remember when I first started doing my own heat treat. I was working with 1095 and quenching in canola oil and using my forge and I would overheat the steel and then quench. I would make the blade and it would seem like it was good and would hold an edge. But once...

A couple of humble hand forged knives by Mark Andrews

I just finished up these to blades. I made the Walnut one for a business associate (day job) who I consider a friend. He is struggling with the insidious disease of cancer. I call it my Survivor Knife. I wont accept any other outcome for this man. The second one is W2 the activity just came ...

Quench oil that is too fast for a given steel?

I have quenched a few blades of O1 in parks 50 and got about 6 points lower on the RC scale out of the quench than with the slower oil . The parks was at room temperature . I was curious about that. In my small test I was able to keep it at 58 RC after tempering at 350 . I get 64/63 out of the...

I got caught flat footed today.

I used to care about stuff like that .. Trying to just sell a knife any knife. I really don't care for those people. I like to deal with people who understand what made in America means . Take pride in being a craftsman the people who want that in a product will seek you out. We are all guilty...

Evenheat arrived I'm impressed with it.

That's great.. I have had my Evenheat for about a year and a half before that I had a old fashioned burnout kiln. It has made everything better for me because of being able to program . You should start saving for your grinder and if you can I recommend a VFD.. highly recommend one. Also keep in...

    1095 didn't harden

I used to have trouble with 1095 before I invested in a evenheat and a big bucket of Parks 50 . I use a lot of Aldo's 1095 the big thick bars and forge them down and they make some of the sharpest knives . I know there is a lot of great steel out but I still like 1095

    Bandsaw question

Going to have to say my portaband and swag table is one of my most used tools in the shop. The best thing about it is that it cuts true . I have a Milwaukee variable speed on it and it gets used for handles and for cutting pins. I profile all the easy cuts before heading to the grinder. Switches...

    Scandi Grind Question

You do have to consider thickness of steel . The first picture is 3/16 with 10 or 11 degree per side can't remember exactly but around there. and the second picture is 5/32 with 12 degree per side . This is how I do it. I have learned all this on my own right or wrong. I sell many knives in...
