    YEAH! my first hamon!

Very well indeed! i like the way you polished it, way better than the black oxide finish many left on their hamon, IMHO

    I need a drink....and help with 52100!

Most probably, if the steel is actually 52100, the temp readings are off. If they were right, your treatment should have unlocked enough carbon to give you way higher readings...assuming the rc tester is dialed on.

    Friction folder, code name DAG.

Very nice developement, thank you for your efforts to make it into a very solid WIP!!! I'm using the same kind of square tube jig for drilling slipjoint's scales upside down!! I just need to be sure my clamps don't "give" too much, so usually i "help" them and feel with my fingers while drilling.

    YEAH! my first hamon!

Wow!!! it is beautiful, also the blade shape!! The more pricey and glittering fishing lure i buy, the less chance i have to actually get a fish....so i'm with you and your elks ;) At least if you won't see the elk you won't ruin that beautiful hamon finish eh eh :)

    12C27 Air Quench ????

Yes Sandvik pushed his developement of edge steels toward the research for the best edge stability and rust resistance. To reach their goals they want the minimum necessary alloying, so they minimize the stabilization of the austenite vs. other more alloyied SS. That is why, depending on how...

    Built my own carbidizer

Is a rough surface desirable for a lock face? does it gall the tang face and just "invert" the sticky mechanism?

    12C27 Air Quench ????

yes plates, of course :) air-quench should be always read as plate quench.

    The Riddle of Steel

You know, the problem with knife steels is exactly that. It'sn not likely that aerospace industries will develope nice knife steels, they are not supposed to. But they most surely will produce nice new hypes around the knifemaking world...exactly the same way the high carbide steel from the...

Heat Treat and Tempering 52100 for Springs

Blue is what i shoot for with carbon steel. I make sure i temper the spring together with the blade....well and throughly, multiple cycles. After that i sand out the golden straw oxydes, clean with acetone or alchool, take the torch and "paint" the flexing portion of the spring until it turns...

    I'm stumped with 440c

What Ed said is very spot on about stainless. What i can suggest, if you still want a stainless blade, is to switch to steels like sandvik 14c28n, or AEB-L, because those are steel that behave very similar to carbon steels in terms of edge stability. Bear in mind that with any SS you'll have to...

    1075 crack...

it is a nice hamon. Someday if you will you could still keep polishing it. Nice job, and good to you for getting the P#50

    Stainless water qench?

Any speed exceeding the speed necessary to avoid the pearlite transformation and get full martensite it is only increasing the risks of warps and micro/macro cracking the steel. Leaving water out of the equation.....slow oils may be used for quenching air hardening steels with success.

    1075 crack...

It depends, both on the mill job and on your grinding attitude. If it is coarsely spheroidized from the mill, normalizing will help redistributing the carbon quicker, allowing a shorter final soak, after the grain refining cycles. if it came finely spheroidized, and you provide to grind it...

    1075 crack...

Keeping the blade 20 seconds in the water, as it has been pointed out, is kind of begging for the "ping" sound....i've been through it :( But with hypoeutectoid carbon amount in solution there is also the risk of interrupting too soon and having too much autotempering effect during the...

    Lanny's Clip

I like the knife and the sheat. Is the belt loop stitched closed? or is it open (like a wallet) to be folded around the belt?

And it is odd, isn't it? I would have thought that given Sheffield tradition, England were the home of the slippies

Am getting frazzled and feeling overwhelmed. Needing to vent and get a little feedbac

Ouch!! that bite is painful just by looking at the pic!! No wonder why it set you in a bad mood my friend. I am also an hobbist with a long family/friend schedule of "no rush, as soon as it's ready" LOL...eventually they get their knives. They are also asking to buy, but i'm not ready to...

    Hidden screws and tools?

As Calvin said! ;) I can tell you what i would do: Cut the torx driver head and silver solder it 90° to the shaft (or to a thin plate)...voilà :) I bet also epoxy would do the trick with less heat to the tool.

    Pro-Cut/Craftsman wet grinder build.

Great job!! Wet grinding has been a long time discovery, but somehow has been lost in our knifemaking toolbox. Kudos to you for your rigg...i hope others will follow. Is there a pump or is it just linked to the tap water?
