    Upgraded my grinder!

Amazing grinding setup!!! Do you take care to invert the belt to second the printed on direction when grinding in reverse mode? My grinder is low, and I grind sitting on a chair, with my wrists supported by my knees or the work rest if i'm using it...i find it a very steady position

depending on the materials, also heat coloring could bring out contrast. The better thing is "shaving" a little testing coupon from the billet and do some trials

Incomplete solder joint, slipjoint bolster technical request

YYEEESSSSS!!! :) :) :) It can be done! I left the piece submerged overnight in alchool, then thoroughly brushed the unsoldered line area with alchool and a toothbrush. Of course the hair of the toothbrush couldn't reach inside the joint, but had created enough velocity of the alchool to remove...

I finally feel like a big boy...

Travis, running in reverse is not for actually using it, it is just a test to see if the wheels are well aligned and to show if the tracking is taking care of a misalignment, which may translate in less smoothness than the machine could provide

Broke in a cork belt, belt broke and tore my finger...

I don't know if it is what it was suggested above, but i suggest to have a 2 inch( + a little) notch in the work rest, so to "embrace" a little the platen....this way you get side supporting shelves at the sides of that orrendous hungry gap. Man, i feel for your finger, had the same experiences...

I finally feel like a big boy...

Congratulations!!! Does it run tracking well also in reverse turning? A nice way to test wheels alignment is to run it in reverse and see if the belt keeps stay centered

Ah ah ah, the forger illness!!! It is very funny to forge blades, a little less finishing the knives ;)

Incomplete solder joint, slipjoint bolster technical request

The graphite of the pencil is a thing that isolate the steel (or brass etc..) from the flux and solder. I use it to shield the pin (the pin keeps things in place) and the parts i don't want to mess with solder. My idea is that if i clamp everything i may be able to run another session of...

    Heat Treating CPM154 Slipjoint Springs

Please be aware that the hrc doesn't count for the stiffness of the spring... It is just the thickness that rules how stiff the spring will be. The hardness will tell just if the spring will not be able to return true after flexing and will loose its shape (<45 hrc) or if it will be too brittle...

Well, you'll be even happier if you use also some coolant on the stones. Oil on the diamond and water on the whetstones. Approaching the edge without generating heat is slower, but certainly very rewarding. I don't use those kind of systems, but just the stones. With a little pratice the human...

Incomplete solder joint, slipjoint bolster technical request

Hallo, i'm in the build of a swayback and i had issues. I have soldered (pre-tinning-parts technique) ss bolsters to ss liners, and one of them shows a little black line front/back where the solder didn't run, at the scale side. I use the "lead pencil barrier" technique to prevent the solder...

    Cryo?

i can't remember well, i'm sorry (not being too much involved in SS), but the deep freeze (short time, "moderate" under zero) and the LN procedure (24h, "deep" under zero, Cryo so to speak), are totally different beasts, and aim different specific targets, the latter being related to producing...

    Clip Point Question

i also prefer to cut the swedges after the main bevels; i find i have more control of the lines that way...the lines where swedge and bevel meets. I cut the swedges with files and sandpaper though, not with the grinder because i have not yet such control on the very little surface involved.

    Dry Ice - warped blades!

I wonder why Sandvik advises against re-ht their steels...knowing the WHY-NOT's may turns out into HOW-TO's, so to speak ;) In my opinion they sell their 14c28n with a very nice carbon/carbide distribution setup as optimal starting place for ht, and once you get martensite and go for another...

"Orange Crush" now lives in Montana!

Really a nice monster :) How does a big press is supposed to wreck steel? I try to guess (but i'm interested in the actual answer): i imagine the big billet starts getting cold, but since the press is a big monster she doesn't care and squeezes the cold steel until a lot of cracking occours...

    explanation of graph please

Thoughness is the ability to resist sudden loads (impacts), and wear resistence is the ability to whitstand abrasion. Holding an edge is more of a function of thoughness+ strenght and thus the stability of the matrix. You loose the edge from chipping or rolling. With alloy steels it boils down...
