So let's say I want to get into doing forging work..What do I need?

I was in your same shoes a little over a 1 1/2 ago. Satarted with small fisher anvil, home made coal forge (I welded up), few different hammers and tongs. I went full bore into Damascus as well and while it can be done with hammer, you will really see better results with press or power hammer...

    Storing heat treating oil.

@macclellan - the Maine one you see is an American made JHM Competitor. Weighs 260 and stand weighs around 100#. I have it chained so if I'm bending stuff, there is no risk of anvil moving. To the left of the JHM, you can see a second anvil - 135#Fisher which I adore. The JHM is the shop...

Here's what I use Just about anything sturdy will work - I cut the top off an old mig CO2 tank and welded on some leg extensions to stabilize. I can drop lid on the extinguish should the fluid flame up.

Thanks again for comments - I used white out and even though my billet was not perfect, it dropped right out once I pealed canister open. Will re-enforce as suggested and am working on next size smaller for progression. Do you go to regular (?name) dies once billet removed from canister for...

Canister Weld failure - What might have been my mistake???

Steel must be garbage I took that cracked billet back to shop ground into cracks, heated, fluxed, then brought up to a white heat - Squished the crap out of again on the press. They still have multiple cracks everywhere. What would be the brownish coloring? I think that has something to do...
