My First attempt at a Hammon...

Well, I thought before I tried to do a hammon on the large Bowie I'm working on, I Should probably try it on something first. So I decided to risk the Blade I did the file work on the handle. I coated with a thin layer of furnace cement diluted with water. Then coated the blade and spine with...

I bit off a huge chunk...

Well when I drilled and put the tang on, it was way too big. :( I cut it down and bent it a little more, But I haven't decided if I will use it yet. On another note, I tried a hammon on a knife that I heat treated today. It was 1095, which I hear is more difficult to get a good hammon, but...

I bit off a huge chunk...

I tried a hammon on a different knife today to see how it went. It is in the oven Tempering right now. :) I need some input here. I made this guard from the same spring. I left the pits in it and wanted some input on if anyone has an opinion on it. Go? Or NO Go?

I bit off a huge chunk...

When I first designed this knife it was a full tang knife. Then I realized that I don't know how to make or put on a tang for a full tang knife like this. I thought about it for a while and decided I would put the full tang on hold while I did some research and just make it a hidden tang...

    testing different types of etching

That will be interesting. Only thing I might have done different is cut the pieces longer so they could still be used for knives later. :).

I bit off a huge chunk...

Well, I was looking at the 2012 Bowie contest and just knew I would have to give one a try. I have done mostly smaller knives and this one, although not big by Bowie standards (probably not even medium) is by far the largest I have attempted. I decided to do it with a leaf spring so I wouldn't...

Very impressive! Especially considering your tool list. I like the design and lines on it. I think you and I have similar tastes in knives.

    Ok LaGrange, you dared me!

Thank you Bowman. I have made a bunch of knives very quickly, I think I need to slow down now... I tend to rush everything because I want to see how it will turn out. :)

    Ok LaGrange, you dared me!

Oh don't worry I was only kidding. I didn't take it as an insult in any way, you were very kind, I took it like you probably intended. As an open ended question. You said why? and I thought HMMMM why indeed? :)

    Ok LaGrange, you dared me!

Well, Not really, but you did ask why I didn't continue the file work into the handle on my other thread. :) Well, I decided to give it a try. I did the reverse of what I have been doing. No file work on the blade, full file on the handle. I tried to get a picture but taking a picture didnt...

    Nearly complete.

Thats a good question, I didn't run the file work down thru the handle because I couldn't see how it would work thru the guard and down the handle. Do I allow it to fill with epoxy? Or do I try to run the filework into the guard and handle wood? I chickened out cause I didn't want to mess it...

    Nearly complete.

Here is one I nearly have complete. 8 Inches overall with 3 1/2 inch blade of 1095 HC steel. Handle is Local Black walnut that I stabilized and the guard I made out of a piece of leaf spring. My first try at this style of knife. I wanted to try one and then if it turned out buy some Damascus...

    Home made deer antler knife?

Here is something close to what you might be looking for. I made it for my dad for Christmas. Mine is out of an elk antler. But the shape is similar to your horn.
