Thanks Calvin. It is a bit more work but a lot of fun. You should do one just to add it to your resume.

    Mesquite Burl Bowie

Thanks DeMo. I appreciate that. The customer requested a wood that was native to Texas so we agreed on Mesquite. The nice burl slabs took some time to locate. Most Mesquite just looks like lumber. D-

    Mesquite Burl Bowie

Hi Mark & thanks. The stainless is a bit easier but mainly I wanted the spacer to be the same material as the liners. The stainless shows the details of the file work better imo. I stick them all in the forge to darken them and then lightly sand the highlight areas. Makes 'em pop. D-

    Hydraulic Press Pump Question

Hi Brandon, I'm looking at a 6 gpm Vickers v10 series fixed rate pump vs a 16/4 gpm 2 stage log splitter pump. I'm using a 4" cylinder and a 3600 rpm 7.5 hp motor, so neither will be slow. Just wondering if there is a major noise difference between the two pumps. Thanks

    Hydraulic Press Pump Question

For those with real life hydraulics systems experience... I'm collecting parts for a hydraulic press build and have been offered a used vane pump for about the same cost as a new gear pump. Noise is something I'm addressing so can anyone tell me if the vane pump will be that much quieter? I'm...

Last question for a while ,I promise.

Regarding alternatives to Parks 50, I've had good luck with McMaster Carr 11 second quench oil. Here are some samples of various thicknesses of 1095 after RC testing. Far superior to my results with canola or peanut oil and basically the same price as those were plus shipping.

    Satinite question

The last time I bought Satanite I went thru HighTempTools here: http://www.hightemptools.com/refractorycoatings.html and thinned it to a thin pancake batter consistency. I've since switched to Dap Fireplace mortar (in the caulking tube) from HD. It doesn't pop off in the heat like Satanite...

    What tool next?

It's not glamorous, but having adequate lighting in your shop and adding a quality respirator & some sort of dust control system (high or low tech) is a big plus.

    Designing folding knives

Thanks for your input Don. I was just reading your Texas Toothpick build-along project from several years ago on another forum. Very instructive. Thanks again.

    Designing folding knives

Thanks for the info Ed, and I'll try the plexiglass. Yep, understanding the "triangle" and its geometry was my main goal while doing this first folding knife. After several years of doing only fixed blades, I'm really looking forward to taking this next step in my progression as a maker.
