    Suggestions on a Maul

Understood. I would like to hear about it. Their website is hard to navigate and their catalog on the website just has the item numbers but no prices and when I try to look up the item number in their shop it doesn't have it..... Just a whole bunch of difficult.

I took a look at the Weaver website and couldn't get a price to save my life for their 16oz maul....

Satin and Matte finishes by Blasting and Tumbling

So I have been looking into different types of finishes than just spending loads of time with paper squares finishing my knives and hurting my fingers. I did make some sanding sticks which I like but I would like to discuss some "Satin and Matte" finishes that can be accomplished by tumbling...

    Suggestions on a Maul

Yeah, I was interested in Mauls. The Tandy Leather ones are just to expensive to what I want to pay. I can't justify ~$90 for a maul.

    sloppy guard problems

So you can use them as a drill bit but they don't chatter and walk? I know nothing about mill stuff yet and this sounds like a good bit type of have. What is double ended? Because that would make my life easier if they don't walk and chatter.

    sloppy guard problems

Hey Frank! do you just hit the guard with the hammer or do you use some sort of cushion to protect it? GHaile: Thanks for the idea on the files.

    sloppy guard problems

It didn't dawn on me to use the file guide. That is a good idea. I pretty much do what you do, GHaile, minus the mill etc and no file guide. What is a 4 flute end mill? Because that might be a better way to go about it as well. One problem is that my files are really old and bad, they went...

    sloppy guard problems

So I have some problems with drilling and fitting my guard. I don't have a mill so I used a undersized drill bit and drilled the holes and then used a file to fit the tang. But It comes out crooked and sometimes oversize so I have to start over. Can you guys give me a good process that...

    Suggestions on a Maul

I saw that once. I was hoping not to pay so much for a mallet or maul. Would a 16oz maul or mallet work well for just tooling leather sheaths? Or should I go heavier?

Knife Makers vice and sanding fixture?

I didn't see that... That would work but now all i need is something like the other stand to do sanding on.

    Suggestions on a Maul

So I am unhappy with the poly-mallet that I am using for my tooling. It has lots of give and just let me get the results I am looking for. Some of the other leather stuff I have been looking through show guys using Mauls. I was hoping you guys could give me a suggestion on what type of maul...

Knife Makers vice and sanding fixture?

So I have come to the point where I need to purchase a knife makers vice and sanding fixture for it. I would make one but I can't weld. I was hoping someone knew where I could get something made for me or purchase from a shop something like what Nick Wheeler made for his shop?

Water Quench and Hamon Questions for 1095

I understand what you are saying. My problem come when its out there but its really really hard to find in the search function, and then everyone gets mad because it was asked again. But the answers are imbedded into something that you have to read through a ton of pages to find it. So I...

Water Quench and Hamon Questions for 1095

I will agree with this, thats why you try to Heat Treat at the lower end of the appropriate Temps. The only other thing that I can think of Shane is that the eutectiod point is, I think, .77% I got to the point recently where I got tired of just hearing answers with no reasons, being laughed...

Water Quench and Hamon Questions for 1095

:biggrin::biggrin: Yeah it come about from utilizing the torch. You can see that the area that flame followed was hotter than the surrounding areas leaving the band. I want to make sure that I state that using a torch can work but it isn't the best way to HT, it leads to inconsistent...

Water Quench and Hamon Questions for 1095

I agree with Kevin that W2 would be better for hamons but you still can get a hamon just not as great as a W2 one in my opinion with the 1095 from Aldo. I used Satanite clay for coating my 1095 blade. Some of the best way to keep your blades safe, not just when doing 1095 in water is to make...

    Hardening II- Quenching

Keven, I have a weird question. Is it possible to use fast quench oil like parks 50 for all steels, say O-1? Could doing an interrupted quench provide the correct timing for the quench to allow for O-1 to quench properly?
