    Thanks for the help guys

It didn't happen quickly, but thank you. It took three years of messing up a lot of stuff to make knives and sheaths for me that I thought were close to being good. But I do have to adimit Steven, your post with the video of hand sanding did help tremendously on this knife

    Thanks for the help guys

I wanted to thank you guys for your help. KT, Paul Long and Dwayne Puckett talked to me when I started with my first botched sheath thread. Helped out a lot. Took a while to find the little things that make it better, but it helped a lot.

    My Cheap Craftsman Belt Grinder

Good job. The craftsman can make good knives just like any other grinder, you just have to get use to it. Eddie - if you can wait and save for a more powerful grinder, thats what I would do. But like you saw, you can make knives with a craftsman...

    2 x 72 belts?

So I have seen a lot of talk about just types of belts. I have been saving for a KMG. And realized that I have no idea what any of the belts people talk about for the 2 x 72 grinders. What do I need to know about the different types of belts? ( I have only used the Ceramic, AO, and...

Grain size Ok so or should I go finer?

So the first two pieces are from just normalization and no hardening afterwards? I was always under the impression that you would want to normalize, then harden, and check the grain. Then take a separate piece of the same steel and then normalize twice and then harden and then check the grain...

    Thermal Cycle Scale?

Josh - I hear you. Scale is a pain in my opinion. Plus you start hearing people talk about decarb and whatever. What it comes down to for me is what makes my life easier working on the knives? By preventing as much scale as possible it limits my time at the grinder after HT, but what it...

    Thermal Cycle Scale?

So I tried both ATP641 and a thin wash of Santinite. I find that the Santinite works way better for the thermal cycle process. The ATP641 flakes off when cooling and needs to be re-applied every single time you take the knives out of the oven.

Pattern making- layout tips Post yours here

I use heavy duty, card stock for my patterns. Plexiglass is also a good idea that I saw. If you want to do a metal pattern make sure it is a super hard pattern. That way if you wanted it to be exact you can grind up to the pattern and not mess up the pattern much.

    Thermal Cycle Scale?

Thermal cycle temps are 1600, 1500, 1400, 1300. Leaving the blade in only until the oven hits the desired temp and then out. The blades are soaking for about 4 hours and some of the scale is starting to rub off, so it might be just normal scale from what some of my maker friends are telling...

    Thermal Cycle Scale?

So I have found that I get this "thin scale" when I thermal cycle my blades. I put the blades in, hit the temp and then when it hits temp take them out and hang them so they can cool enough for me to touch and then continue again. This scale is really brittle, it starts to crack and then...
