    Plastic for knife templates

Can you clamp it to your workpiece and drill/grind at full speed without ruining it? If you just want a pattern to scribe to, you can use almost anything, including cereal-box cardstock, or better yet save a couple bucks and just scan your design, print it out as needed and glue the paper to...

Feedback - Feedback - Feedback Please ! Hometown Hero Build

I've been watching this project since you started it, Bill, and I haven't commented earlier because: I'm absolutely down with contributing a suitable knife and leather sheath to a serviceperson... I have several finished knives with sheaths ready to go, and more HT'ed blades that I could finish...

    Plastic for knife templates

Plex is difficult to cut cleanly, especially in complex shapes and tight corners like a knife template. It tends to chip and crack. A cut-off wheel in a dremel that's slowed way down works OK for the basic lines and curves. (too fast and the plex will melt a little and make it hard to get a...

    Prison Shiv as High Art?

I don't think it looks like a prison shiv (too cleanly ground and well-made) and I wouldn't know high art if it bit me on the behind... but whatever it is, I like it!

File work in the handle area?

Folks mix colored pigments with their epoxy to achieve the look you're talking about. It fills in the filework so it doesn't clogged with gunk, and makes it stand out nicely. I'm not familiar with the actual products used, hopefully someone will post links.

    Your Thoughts?

No. I think that sort of challenge is irresponsible, unless it's meant specifically for knives that are built for that sort of thing. Many of their test are quite reasonable, and should give a decent idea of a knife's cutting ability. But puncturing oil drums and turning screws is just dumb...

Just started my fillet knife project

That seems reasonable to me :) If he uses it like a filet knife and not an axe or prybar, it may well last a lifetime. But I wouldn't take the same chance on a regular basis ;)

Just started my fillet knife project

That's almost exactly how I drill barstock when I want to break off a chunk the quick and dirty way. Couple whacks with a cold chisel and it comes right apart. Just sayin'. I'm not sure how that would hold up after HT and sandwiched between metal bolsters, but you've removed nearly half the...

    bog oak

Try contacting Burl Source. I just noticed he mentioned getting some bog oak over on BFC. He's a good guy.

    bog oak

I don't know anything about bog oak, but in general I highly recommend checking out luthiery sites when looking for nice wood. Guitar and violin makers prize the same qualities we do, durability, stability and of course beauty. Sometimes you can find neck blanks of highly figured maple...

    Terrio Handmade Knives picture thread

Only if someone from Alaska wants to buy it :) I wanted to set it apart from the million other bushcraft knives out there and figured bushcrafty folks would like the Big Dipper... I honestly forgot it was also on the Alaska state flag, but that works too! I'll try to get some more pics of the...

    What pin material for slippies?

Yep, use whatever matches your bolster. Or not, if you want some contrast.

    carbon steel choice

I like O1, it seems to have a little better edge-retention than 1084, is quite tough and not hard to sharpen. It's also available in a very wide range of sizes. 1084 definitely works, though.

    2 Grinders?

I have two drill presses and I like having them set-up differently. My plan when I upgrade to a better grinder is to keep the one I have for rough work or a backup. Wait, never mind that... you should just give me the NWG :D

how do YOU explain to someone that a knife is worth a couple hundred dollars

I know that guy and several more like him! And you're right, some folks just don't get it ;) What really gets me is the fellows who live in $250,000 homes, spend $10,000 every fall to go out west and shoot an elk with a $3,000 custom rifle, and still carry a WalMart special knife :3:
