Help,Criticize,Teach... This is my first knife. WIP

I HIGHLY recommend a disk grinder... but there's quite a bit to it. IMHO, it needs to be variable speed and reversible. The reversible part is probably the most important with vari speed a close second. I did it for awhile on a balls out, non-reversible disk sander, and it pretty much sucked...

Andersen Forge - Brut de Forge

VERY cool Karl!!! I need to do more of that. I really like this style. The funny thing is you make a knife like this and people say, "Oh, it's hand forged!" As opposed to a super highly finished piece they manage to convince themselves a machine made it. Thanks for sharing Karl! cool 1

Help,Criticize,Teach... This is my first knife. WIP

Hi Paul :) Looks like you're off to a really good start! First off, I like that you had the blade fixtured well when you drilled your holes. You always hear makers talking safety, but then see 8 out of 10 hand hold a blade while drilling. Good on 'ya :) Plunges are a tricky spot even after...

How many knives to take to a show?

Very good points about the style of knife! I think Ed and I are on the same page because we're targeting like minded collectors. It is the perception of most (and VERY true in my case) that a forged, finely finished knife takes a L - O - N - G time to build. I think if somebody doing what...

    coolant supply for hand sanding???

Yep... Tim Hancock's book. A GREAT book by the way. Shows an unbelievable body of work, as well as Tim making one of his dog-bone daggers from start to finish. I'd think the man was amazing whether he was my friend or not... fortunately I can and do call him a friend. :) Mike... that...

    coolant supply for hand sanding???

I know I derailed this thread myself, but I am still interested in doing it... so let's see if I can clear some of this stuff up. I don't want to actually have a constant supply of flood coolant just washing over my work like you'd see on a CNC machining center. What I DO want/am...

Do makers use their own knives?

I always have one by my side if I'm out fishing, hiking, etc. Don't really hunt anymore other than at SafeWay ;) If I was currently making more lock-backs I'd probably carry one all the time... like ALWAYS. I definitely use them in the shop and kitchen... A LOT in the kitchen! cool 1

    coolant supply for hand sanding???

Well at this rate I'm surprised nobody has told me to just hand sand in a fish tank. :p I thought "coolant" might get me less flack than "lubricant." :D LOL I guess it doesn't matter if you're doing hand work so fast you need coolant or a constant supply of lubricant...nevermind...

    coolant supply for hand sanding???

Knifemaking isn't the fun part... it's the copious amounts of time spent on figuring out different ways to do it. huh1 :D

    coolant supply for hand sanding???

So lately my wheels have been turning about building a set up so I can have my choice of coolant flushed over a blade while I'm hand sanding it. Something I could tap a switch and get some coolant to wash over the blade and then turn it right back off. I've considered pond pumps, the coolant...

How many knives to take to a show?

Seems like a bad idea to me too. One year at Blade a buddy of mine decided to do just that. He figured he was keeping his demand, but with a smaller (perceived) supply. A collector bought one of his pieces. He later came by my table and was mad as hell after he went by my buddy's table and...

Well thank you Mr. Les George :D I have a feeling that Tracy's forum is going to have the feel that BF had several years ago when there was lots of good info floating around AND lots of guys having a good time making fun of each other! :D

How many knives to take to a show?

Good point!!! 2thumbs In all seriousness, I DO think some makers bring too many. There are some guys that can bring 30 knives and sell them in 10 minutes.... but unless you're one of those 5 guys, then I'd NOT bring that many. ;) There was a fella at the last show I went to, that had a...

    Getting ready for a Show!

Doh! Sorry Rusty. huh1 I agree with that Hawaii/Texas/Marine guy... His method is proven effective!!! :o   :D Another one.... be clean and don't stink!!! I've been to a couple shows where there were makers that smelled like they'd just come in from putting up a couple thousand...
