    Lapping pivot hole in blade

    - Is the ream you use after HT carbide or something else? Where do you get it? Carbide - When using the barrel lap, how do you do it ... by hand, by machine? I use a hand drill and Todd said he did. - Do you move the lap in & out of the hole or spin it (or the blade) keeping on one spot on...

Tomahawk drift from The Blacksmith Depot

Send Keith Johnson a PM and ask him, he's been making throwing hawks for ages and so many that he probably couldn't give you a good guess of how many. BTW, his s/n is K R Johnson

    First Folder

It looks good, is that a bottle opener on the tang? Cool idea if it is :) I've heard some makers say that they never grind the blade in the handles, they use a holder, but I have always ground my blades while fitted in the liners. One of the major benefits to doing it this way is that you can...

My Folder Was Siezed By U.K. Customs!!

Thats probably it, the blade of a folder may not lock open (friction folders are allowed with under 3" blade) I always put down tool or camp tool.

Ever hit a roadblock that you just can't seen to get past?- or how to make a folder!

I did it once a long time ago when I was making lockbacks, the hardest part is using a pivot for the lock bar, you'll need to use flat head screws on the pivot but remember to try to get a hardened pivot. The rest of the knife can be assembled like a regular liner lock.

    New problems.

How are you grinding the taper? I don't really do tapered tangs any more but the guy that told me how to do it said he did the whole thing after HT (nobody that I knew of was plate quenching back then) and he'd hollow grind down the center and then rough it out on the platen then go to the disk...

Ever hit a roadblock that you just can't seen to get past?- or how to make a folder!

Yep! and as Mr. Burch pointed out, things are going to get messed up and you'll waste some time and materials. Start out with some 1095 or O1, they are dirt cheap. I decided to learn to make autos shortly after I went full-time but that meant that I wouldn't produce anything to sell for well...

    Blaze Ceramic Belts

I never run my grinder over 50% when grinding steel and slower for ti and they seem to work great at that speed. I have a KMG with a 2hp variable speed motor.

    Blaze Ceramic Belts

I rough grind most of my blades after heat treat since I started using the blaze belts (i do a small straight grind on the really thick blades before HT), I'll get 5-6 blades from one belt, then the belt is put on the wall for profiling steel and then titanium. It seem like after the belt get...

    Half tanned?

It's used to make sheaths for Puuko knives, look up Mike Blue, I think he has an account here and I think he sells some of it.

    AEB-L..

Chuck Bybee sent me a piece of it to try out and report back to him. One of it's best characteristics is it's corrosion resistance, I made a kitchen knife out of it and all I do is rinse it off after use and hang it up. it has some very mild discoloration but not bad at all. I am not too...

    Teach me about 'Orange Peeling'.

I haven't tried any of the way's Les G. mentioned but I know he does a sweet orange peel. I do it with a buffing wheel with greaseless compound, 150g, 240g or 400g, they all work well. It comes up fast when you buff in different directions. What I like about this method is you don't have to...

    The Business of Knife Shows

I need to set up a mailing list, has anyone done a tutorial on that? I hate to admit it but I'm getting older and I can't keep up with technology. I agree about the photos, I'm making a couple knives right now just so I have something to send off to Coop.

    Taking Deposits

I've found it necessary to take a 10% deposit from people I haven't dealt with before. If I put someone in a slot on my waiting list and they back out when the knife is finished it creates a hole in my income, I could have been filling another order with that time. The deposit doesn't really...
