Teach me about 'Orange Peeling'.

Hi Guys,

I have been meaning to try an orange peel effect on some Ti for a while but keep forgetting. Just got a catalogue through and flicking through I saw the scotchbrite belts, which reminded me.

So, I believe I'm right in thinking that you do it with a scotchbrite belt but what colour? Brown, Maroon, Blue?

Any tips to share and more importantly anything that I should categorically avoid?

Thanks guys! :D

I have done it 3 ways, you can use a wire wheel on a regular pedistal type grinder. This way is probably the easiest, makes a fine pattern orange peal.

You can use a scotch bright wheel, I know a guy that does it like this all the time, but it doesnt work well for me. I may not have broken the code with wheel type and speed...

I usually do it with a brown belt from Tracy. I think that his are Norton not 3m so they have a different brand name than Scotch bright. This way leaves the biggest pattern for me.

Basically you want to get whatever your using fast as possible and lean into it as hard as possible. Your trying to heat up and smear the ti. Your mileage my very and I burn myself all the time doing this so I recommend you don't try it ever! :) FOr your own safety! ;)

I haven't tried any of the way's Les G. mentioned but I know he does a sweet orange peel.

I do it with a buffing wheel with greaseless compound, 150g, 240g or 400g, they all work well. It comes up fast when you buff in different directions. What I like about this method is you don't have to lean into it to get results, so you don't mess up your screw counterbores too much.
