    My Latest Hunter

Thanks guys. I appreciate the comments. I should be done with a mini-Nessmuck sometime today and I tried bluing the flats black on this one as well. The 'Muck will have some of my home brewed coffee bag micarta on it.

    My Latest Hunter

Here's my latest Hunter. I'm fairly pleased with the way it turned out. Not crazy about how thick the handle was. I used 1/8" black G10 for the liner because that was all I had. I put a slight taper from about .700 to .800'ish on the handle. I personally like thinner handles but realize some...

I think Bob Loveless was crazy or really good.

I've often wondered the same thing about Bob. Then it occurred to me that his background influenced the way he made knives, as it does nearly everyone. What I mean is Bob was a machinists so his approach to making knives was from a technical/methodical standpoint. A woodworker or lay person...

    Chevron Tecaco 70 quench oil

I like Jantz. They get stuff to me quick. But before I paid $150 for a five gallon pail of Texaco #70, I'd order a five gallon pail of Parks AAA (or the Maxim Oil equivalent) for around $86 (that's how much mine cost including shipping) or Parks #50 (or the Maxim Equivalent) for around $125 (my...

Shopping for a Hardness Tester...looking for feedback...

Wholesale Tools in my area has one for $799. They have stores across the U.S. Not sure if they're near you or not, but it may pay to check 'em out. Never used one but as soon as I have the extra cash saved up, I'll be bringing that bad boy home!

    buffer safety

I made my 'buffer' from a slow speed grinder that Woodcraft sells. I then mounted on a grinder stand from Harbor Freight. I can stop the wheels just by applying pressure. It's slow and if something gets away from me, it goes behind the grinder stand into the middle of the Garage. So far nothing...

If the KITH is still open, count me in. Should be challenging to say the least!

My Daughter Making A Knife !

That's great Mikey! Nice to see you getting the kids involved. I hope one day she'll understand how fortunate she is to be able to grind on a TW-90! Hey, one day you need to do a pictorial shop tour. I see some interesting toys in that shop!

    Just some starter questions

Nick, welcome to the insanity that is knife making! First off, you'll learn that if you ask a question, you'll likely get a different response from nearly everyone you meet! Doesn't make it right or wrong in most cases. Just do further research until you're convinced the info you're receiving...

    Rc tester

There was a few new ones on Ebay in the $800 range. There is a Wholesale Tools outlet nearby that has a new one for $799. They've banned me from looking at it because they're tired of wiping my drool off of it!

    Shopping for a new camera

Yeah, what Laurence said. Normally when talking about electronics and software, you never want a "first of its kind" of anything! ;)

I don't know, maybe it's the angle of the camera, but that handle looks huge! I would use some Tru Oil on that Walnut. Probably about 4 or 5 coats to begin with. Other than that, I like the overall design. Nice work.

I am having trouble with the feel of a knife.

Backtines made a great comment about grinding out the square edges. I had this problem at one time also. I see new people making otherwise good looking knives except that they're blocky. Heck, I see a lot of experienced makers making knives with handles that are too big imho. I've got a knife...

    2013 Knife Making Progress

That looks real nice! Have you ever checked the balance point of your knives after you've completed them? The only reason I ask is because I don't see any lightening holes in your tang. A knife like that can get handle heavy pretty quick depending on what type of material you use.

    Hand Sanding Guru Needed

My hand sanding was reduced greatly and the final finish on my blades went up dramatically when I started using 3M Gator belts. I start at the A300 and go down to A30 then start my hand sanding at 400 using Rhynowet sanding paper. I pay about 50 cents a sheet for it. Works better than any other...

    New Shop Light

Isn't that light hot to work around? I have two of those on a portable stand I use outside and they put off a lot of heat.

Cheapest knife handle material to use for experience?

I went to Lowes and bought a 2ft plank of Premium Oak when I first started. I think it was around $6 or somewhere in that neighborhood. I made several knife scales from that plank and I still have some left! I'm sure any hardware or home improvement store/lumber yard would have a short piece of...

    2013 Knife Making Progress

I have/had that problem as well. For me, it's the whole pressure/guide thing. I can't stress enough to watch where the sparks are in relationship to your belt. You may think you're doing great and look at the spark pattern and see that all the sparks are on the right or left side of the belt...

    2013 Knife Making Progress

Nice thread Steve. Not sure how I've missed it till this morning, but spent the last 2 hours reading since I found it (wow, how time flies when you're on a forum!) I see you're having the same problem with the plunge lines as I'm having. I also have a 2x42 and have cranked out 50 or so knives...
