    Micarta Question

I had the same problem with white paper micarta. Use sandpaper for wood. I forgot whether it was 3M or Scotch, but one makes a red colored paper. It won't remain in the pours like the dark gray/black wet dry sandpaper we use for metal. Jay

    The grizzly!!!

That's a good price but you might want to consider a 1 1/2 HP motor and a VFD that can work with a 1 1/2 to 2 HP motor. I think I built the GIB with Beaumont parts (10" contact, idler and drive wheel and platen set up), an Ebay "new" Baldor 1 1/2 HP 3 phase motor and a KBAC27D control for...

    The grizzly!!!

Young Pup, I wish I could help you with this. A friend of mine had the same problem. As I understand the Grizzly, it has a single phase motor that is integral to the unit. By that I mean, it can't be replaced by a 3 phase motor that you could wire a VFD to. Hopefully, someone has successfully...

    is it really handmade??

Handmade? Interesting question. Webster's defines "handmade" to be an adjective dating to 1613, "made by hand or a hand process." It seems to me that filing and sanding are clearly a hand process, but so is profiling and grinding a blade held by your hands against a belt grinder. So is shaping...

What the heck does 5 gold stars mean

I see posts with 5 gold stars. What does that mean and who makes the decision? Never seen one 5 star post in the folding knife sub-forum. Jay

Pro Photos of Ball Bearing Damascus Dagger

Peter, Awsome dagger, great photo. I enjoyed meeting you at the Badger Knife show Saturday. One of the things I have to learn is how to post full size photos. Usually there are 4 times the guests than members on knifedogs. Guests can't see or open thumbnails. Jay, the guy trying make a slipjoint.

    guards and butt caps

I use 303. It's free machining, inexpensive and entirely different than 304 as far ease of working. It's easy to work. But a friend of mine uses 416. I think a difference is that 416 can be heat treated and hardened a bit, maybe less prone to scratching.

    Beaumont Metal Works Platen

Mike, Now that I think about this a bit more, it may have been a heck of a lot easier to put some washers or another nut to move the contact wheel 1/2" farther away from the tool arm, than what I did. But, either way you'll have to account for the width of the platen body. I think my concern...

    Beaumont Metal Works Platen

Mike, I have a GIB and bought the Beaumont flat platen. It works great, but like everything they make its heavy duty. The body of the platen is 1/2 aluminum and the brackets that attach to the platen arm are 3/8" thick. I only have one tool arm, solid aluminum. I had 1/2", the width of the...

    Trouble soldering bolsters

I've had the same problem. I think my bolster stock was too thick. I'm using 1/8" next time and will try pre-heating, then apply flux and solder, then heat slowly,ie waive the torch, until the solder melts. By the way Mr. Vinings tutorial on this subject is excellent.

    My Hog Killer!!

I think it's a good design well done. IMHO That's a difficult grind that you kept consistent and even on both sides of the blade. How thick was the stock and is it it 154 CPM?
