    Buying knife making supplies question?

Usaknifemaker.com is a great outlet with nearly everything you could want. Jantz is also a go-to. Both have print catalogs, as well. I don't obtain much anywhere else, anymore, aside from large quantities of blade steel which are from Admiral or nsm-ny.com

Is knife making harmful and shorten ones life?

There's a greater likelihood for respiratory complications in our field - the airborne particles, of any of the materials, will cause problems in the long run unless as mentioned above you wear full respirators. I've got bronchitis currently that is just not improving due to me constantly...

    My Cheap Craftsman Belt Grinder

Nailed it. Nice mods - there's nothing else to say. You've got it down and with some further tools and experience you'll go as far as you want. I lopped the return off the right side of my KMG table for the same reason recently and it's guaranteed saved the time spent on the mod and then some...

Talk to me about Norax U936 Belts

That's a great price for them - My $14.00 from my particular supplier was due to the volume, I imagine Trugrit purchases them in much, much greater quantities hence the lower pricing. The cost difference is no matter to me as I have them immediately available during working hours, and no time...

    Lockback lockup trouble

In his lock bar, that feature appears to be a notch to retain a free-floating spring instead of a short spring itself. I've attempted it that way myself before going to an integral spring brought out from the back spacer. As for the lock not staying locked, the notch looks OK - in my limited...

    International shipping Question for knifemakers.

I've had international packages take an additional $40 to $60 so I don't see that being out of the ball park. USPS international flat rate is in the $50 range I believe. You can either just eat it and know how much to quote for next time, or hope the seller is ok with the markup. I usually...

Talk to me about Norax U936 Belts

As mentioned in this thread and several before it, I also use these heavy blue-back structured ceramic Norax U936 belts. I had to order a large quantity of the 3 grits I utilize from my local American Welding and Gas distributor who's the Norton guy around here. I've got 100x, 45x, and 16x...

Talk to me about Norax U936 Belts

Most of my grinding is done prior to heat treatment - but due to the life of these I find that if I'm working extensively after heat treatment this particular belt grade works well.

Talk to me about Norax U936 Belts

I use them extensively as the stock-removal per dollar is excellent with them. Using the medium speed on my grinder, I find heavy pressure is best - the 45x and 16x micron have a tendancy to glaze with light pressure. I go from 100x to 45x to 16x then a scotchbrite belt for a very nice satin...

3 3/8" Drop Point Rimfire, Mirror Polish CPM 154CM, 304 bolsters, Flamed Maple

Steven, Thank you, and I think I possibly could too. A redux of this knife, later this year, I'll see. Thank you all for the kind comments.

    Miller Knife Works, Roughneck

Good looking drop point, I like the combination of materials and the heavy jimping at the thumb rise. 1095 is one of my favorite steels.

3 3/8" Drop Point Rimfire, Mirror Polish CPM 154CM, 304 bolsters, Flamed Maple

This is one that was started a long time ago and finally is finished and ready for sale. The specifications are in the title, comments are welcome and as always thanks for looking! (clarification - this knife has mitered 416 bolsters instead of 304 stainless, sorry about the mix up in the...

    Sales question

Very nice work, it looks like you did an excellent job. Putting handles on and finishing out blades produced elsewhere makes you a "Cutler", and as long as you're honest about the source of the blades your using it's a perfectly honorable profession. Figure the costs of the blades, handle...

Post your New Years Knife related pledge..

Get published. In a lot of ways more exposure and sales are the last thing I need, but I recently received my first Blade magazine in years and I think I'm ready.

Recent BIG set of knives for Christmas, 440C, CPM 154, Bone/Dymondwood/G10

Thank you all for the appreciation - the steel was a major problem this time around and I don't have a solution for it aside from taking a 1" section of each bar that comes in and taking it through the grits and heat treatment to sample the finish before I commit to a given grade of polish. As...

Recent BIG set of knives for Christmas, 440C, CPM 154, Bone/Dymondwood/G10

Those are etched names for family. The etch was a major, major pain this go around, I've done it literally hundreds of times and between changes in the developer for the stencils, the stencil quality itself which varies, and running out of the old etchant that I was used to and trying two new...

Recent BIG set of knives for Christmas, 440C, CPM 154, Bone/Dymondwood/G10

This was a huge job. It was commissioned by a very patient client shortly after Christmas last year and getting it all wrapped up took most of this year to complete. There are 3 sets of 3 knives, a 3 7/8" skinner, 5" hunter and 6" chisel point tanto, each set with a different handle material...

Question about the best abrasive belts...

There is a heavy blue backed U936 grade Norax, with white abrasive, that lasts ridiculously long - the downside is that they're not very flexible at all and the structured nature of the abrasives will leave "corn rows" at times. The life on them is absolutely amazing, though. They are...
