Latest tool - JET JMD18PF mill

One of the best things about the gun show I had a table at in Billings lately was a fellow fabricator I met - he's having me finish out some of his blanks and build him a big very practical and stout bowie in exchange for this mill. I definitely think it was worth the two hours down and back...

    24" wheel grinder......well maybe

Heck yeah, Bruce! I'm tickled pink and can't wait for you to get that big booger spinning. I spoke with Contact Rubber about 16-24 inch wheels awhile back and the 20" was approximately $3,000 and the 24" could have been as much as five thousand bucks. They were wanting some seriously large...

S30V Tanto, Peel Ply G10, stainless fittings and Kydex horizontal rig

Here's the latest one finished up - there were some stones and fossilized chunks in the work progression amongst other things and now that they've passed I'm finishing the knives up pretty fast. This one is Japanese inspired off of all the awesome tanto style blades I've seen lately. It's got...

    Lining Kydex Sheaths

I'm still thinking and working on this one. I'm going to a lengthwise hand-rubbed finish for any Kydex sheathed knives in the mean time - I rather enjoy being able to show off my "across the blade" machine applied finish and this is more a stop gap to avoid the very noticeable across the grain...

    Knifemakers guild show

merzb - I'm looking up the show now and am horrified to hear anything went missing up here in Montana. Any details?

Your most popular model? A recent rendition of my 3" skinner in damascus and mammoth

Do any of you have a particular knife that just keeps getting picked? I'm getting the backlog of knives caught up again - it's been a very busy two weeks. The first batch of pattern welded billets I obtained from Alabama Damascus, one sourced directly from them and the other from Jantz were...

Damascus, 304 stainless and Indigo laminate "Rimfire" 3 3/8" belt knife

This one is jazzed up quite a bit from the last run I made on this pattern, it's not so much an EDC or bushcraft knife anymore as a classy gentleman's fixed blade. 3 3/8" cutting edge, Alabama Damascus .140 random pattern welded billet, 304 stainless mitered bolsters and pins + 5/16" lanyard...

    Need some input..

I used 416 on several knives and got away from it for two reasons - it was tough to find in the sizes I wanted to use at a reasonable cost at the time and in my opinion it's not that much more scuff resistant than brass. 304 is tougher by some margin and that's what I'm looking for. It looks...

What coating for carbon damascus to prevent rust?

Even the good Krylon clearcoat is a super-soft coating. You can dig it with your thumbnail. I'd recommend the clear Cerakote or some similar heat cured coating.

Im Back with a new shop and new knives

Good to hear, John. You build classy knives. I've started to use the mammoth ivory I bought from you this spring - very nice stuff.

    What are you listening to?

I enjoy listening to The Blues Mobile with Elwood every time I'm in the shop late enough for it. Classic rock is great too, everything from Jefferson Airplane to KISS. Most of the time, and it's been this way my entire life, it's going to have Pantera in the mix, anything with Phil Anselmo on...

    Plow knife

I had a very interesting time very early on in my knifemaking. I was using steels ranging from very old large chainsaw bar, to some 1" round sections that had areas of splines left even though they'd been cut into 8" or so sections with a chop saw. I assumed those were axles. Plus some spring...

    Introduction and help wanted.

Here's what I would do - however this is just my opinion. There are many ways to skin this cat. If you've got a 4x36 there's very little another grinder in the 2x42 class will let you do. I would definitely start to save up for a proper 2x72 machine. Which one is another deal entirely and...

Black Wolf Armory Rimfire Steel Choice Poll

Alright, votes are coming in and enough of them I'm leaning towards a decision. Of the choices I've given, I'm getting a wide wide spread with other steels suggested as well and lots of good commentary and reasoning behind any preference. CPM S35VN is in the lead but barely - I'm also getting...

    Hello from Albuquerque

Another zymurgist, excellent! You'll get along well with everyone and very, very well with some of us. I've dabbled in homebrewing for years, am a big fan of IPAs, and can credit a lot of good beer for keeping me in a good mood and round in shape. I'm glad to hear you're an all-grain guy as...

    1095 supplier question

Excellent, Josh! I'll say this - I've never heard "That will be extra." from New Jersey Steel. He's one of us, I'm very glad to hear it. Admiral is a huge company that is primarily industrial, hence them not being the cheapest to work with for very small jobs. twss - if you've got a neighbor...
