    Making 'micarta'

The material didn't turn out too bad but the metal doesn't do anything for me so I doubt that I will be doing it again.

    Making 'micarta'

I decided to try to make some linen micarta scales for some folders I'm attempting. I haven't done this before so I watched a bunch of videos and it seems pretty straight forward. I decided to do it with a twist though and am not sure if it will work or not. I cut off a piece of stainless...

    AEB-L Hunter

Thanks for the kind comments. I like working with AEB-L. It's the only stainless that I have used so far and I think it is a good steel for the end user. It holds an edge well and is very easy to resharpen. I do my grinding post heat treat and it works well for me. I've heard it referred to as...

    AEB-L Hunter

I made this one for a buddy of mine who likes to hunt moose. He wanted a slab sided handle with the edges knocked off. It looks pretty plain, but feels pretty good in the hand. Hopefully it works well for him.

    Small fixed blade EDC

This small fixed blade knife is made out of 1/8" AEB-L stainless steel. I did the heat treat/cryo/temper to 62 Rc. It's a high flat grind with bead blast/belt finish. Warwood scales (similar to linen Micarta but made using 'green' material) sanded to 1000 grit with stainless steel pins. It...

    Asymmetric grinds...Execution, usefulness, critiques

I had a MSC (Mick Strider Custom) folder that had a flat ground blade with an asymmetric secondary bevel. He uses some type of nitride blade coating that is somewhere around 80-90Rc, so I guess in theory the edge should last longer. I'm not a fan of coated blades so I ended up selling that one.

    Grinder Light

I have florescent lighting in the garage and a lamp similar to this mounted at the bench with a 100W equivalent CF bulb (6500K daylight).

    Grinding S35VN post heat treat

Thanks for the info Laurence. I've only ground AEB-L post heat treat and was thinking this might be a real bear to work with.

    Grinding S35VN post heat treat

I have some S35VN that I'll be grinding (60-61Rc) and I was wondering if anyone had any advice/tips/trick that they would care to share.

What's going on in your shop?

That looks pretty good. If I tried something like that it would probably look like the thing that exploded out of someone's stomach in the Alien movie.

    Leather sheath

Thanks guys. I made a few mistakes, but that's part of the learning process.

    Very nice work.

    Leather sheath

I made this one for the knife I've been using in my tests. I've made a few pouch style pocket sheaths for the EDC sized knives that I've made, this is my first one with a belt loop.

    Buffalo quiver sheath

    That is very nice.

how much sq ft for your shop

I'm using 1/3 of a 3 car garage. I do sheaths on the (now converted) reloading bench in the basement and my oven is in the basement also. I doubt I will ever get into forging. When I move I'll build a single car garage just as a workshop.

    Cryo?

Not to side track this, but that reminds me of the climate change debate. As far as sub zero quench goes, with my limited experience I think it's a beneficial step in the knife making process.

AEB-L HT, Pre, Post Grinding Question

I've only ground it post heat treat and didn't find it too bad. I did most of the grinding (probably 80%) with a 60 grit Blaze. The only two steels I've worked with so far are W2 and AEB-L.
