Excellent advice. Wish I had thought of it myself a few months back, lol.

    Steak Knives

Thanks Laurence. Do you think 3/32 stock would be a good thickness for a starting point if I am wanting a defined plunge line? I am considering just profiling the blades, sending them out to HT and then doing my grinding.

I am wondering what steel you guys recommend for making a set of steak knives....

What's going on in your shop?

I drill the tang, then taper as you do, however, I then use double side sticky tape to adhere the scales to the tapered tang (one side at a time) and drill the handle using the existing holes in the tang as my guide. Just be sure to position your scales the same on each side of the tang so they...

    Ironwood Utility

Here is a nice little utility knife I often make. I chose to dress this one up a little with a nice acid etch/blued finish, ironwood scales with black G-10 liner and nickle silver pins. It has a 3 1/4" blade and is an even 8" in length.

    Drop Point Hunter

A busy spring has kept me from knife making duties for the last month or so, but I'm back in the swing of things and offer up this nice little drop point hunter for your consideration. It sports a fully hardened 3 1/4" blade, maple burl scales, red G-10 liners, stainless guard and pins, and...

    4 1/2" Clip Point

Great looking knife Art. I like the vine work on the sheath as well, it makes for a very nice overall package.

    Juniper

I managed to do a test run in Cactus Juice with a set of Juniper scales. The results seem to be satisfactory. There was not a lot of weight gain, the finish is uniform and smooth, the color was darkened a shade, and so far there has been no weeping. The hardness seems to be equivalent to...

    Juniper

It is my understanding that some have had issues with the stabilizing agent not fully curing out in the wood due to the natural resins in the wood itself.

    Juniper

Thanks guys. There isn't a lot of information regarding the use of juniper for knife handles online, and I am not using a piece of burl, though I would assume that juniper burl is very similar to redwood burl as far as hardness is concerned prior to being stabilized. What little info I did find...

    Juniper

What are your thoughts on using Juniper for knife handles, and has anyone had any success with stabilizing this wood for such use?

HA! Now I know why they call it IRONWOOD!

Nice work. I have gone on an Ironwood kick of late and it's definitely a love hate relationship. The end result always seems to be worth the effort though and most people love the look and feel of it.

    Bushcraft Knife II

Here is my slightly tweaked and hopefully improved version of the previous Bushcraft knife. Changes are mostly ergonomic and include enlarged thumb scallops, a taller handle, and more shallow contours in the belly area of the handle. The blade is slightly thicker (approx 5/32 at the widest point...

    Camp Chores/Utility

Here is a little drop point knife I made up for everyday use while out and about camp. Be it food prep, cleaning fish and small game or field dressing a deer this knife should do it all with relative ease. Your comments and suggestions are welcome. Thanks for looking. 1084 differentially...

    Hate it !

I try to breathe up all of my dust so the shop stays clean. (kidding) My shop is small enough that I was forced into the habit of cleaning up messes as they are made.
