    Big Knife, Little Knife

Nice looking Bowie. I especially like the look of the guard on that one.

Happy Anniversary. That is a very unique and ambitious project. Well done.

    Camp Knife

Thank you gentlemen for the compliments. This knife was both a challenge and a pleasure to build. wall e, The guard is a single piece which has been treated with liver of sulfur in order to darken the copper. The darker recess you refer to is simply a hand filed groove in which the full...

    HT w/toaster oven

I see What you're saying Ed, and it seems possible that the oven may be overshooting 400/500 or whatever the set temp is each time it cycles, thus basically thermal cycling your blade 15 or 20 degrees over the desired temperature. This could be happening on the down side as well, which could...

    HT w/toaster oven

I use a plain old, standard size $30 toaster oven and a good accurate oven thermometer so I know what the actual temp is in the oven. My oven holds a steady temp very well, nonetheless, I keep a close eye on it and would not simply stick a knife in there and go to bed. It seems to me that 400...

    Small Utility

This blade was previously posted in the Heat Treatment section of the forum. It was successfully re-treated using clay and used for this neat little utility. Thanks for looking, your observations are welcome. 1084 differentially heat treated 8" OAL 3 1/2" cutting edge Ironwood scales Black G-10...

Tell me about historical ranching/cowboy knives

I am also drawn to that era and plan to do more research as time permits. 'Bernard Levine's guide to knives and their values 4th edition' is an excellent resource although it has a lot more information on folders than fixed blade knives. If you can find a copy it's a good start. I too would be...

    Stacked Hunter

Looking good Rudy. I really like the materials combination. I try to take my pics when it is overcast outside, that way the glare/shadow is minimal.

    Small Game

Thanks Mr.Svinarich. I do not know why I had not considered that it might be dyed. I like the look of the wood a lot and though it seems to undercut quite easily, those areas provide some nice subtle texture for the handle.

    Small Game

Here is what is quickly becoming one of my favorites. The handle material was purchased as Lacewood, however I am not certain about that. Perhaps someone can either confirm or properly identify the material. I included a pic of my help, lol. 1084 differentially hardened steel 8" OAL 3 /5/8"...

    What Happened?

Thanks everyone for the responses. I will be heat treating this blade again using clay. Edited to add results.

    What Happened?

Here is the mostly finished blade. From what I can tell the effect is aesthetic only.

    What Happened?

I took the blade down to 400 grit, convexed the edge and did some testing. Brass rod test is good and cuts through 1/16 brazing rod with no deformity. Most of the chopping was centered upon, and on, both sides of the area of interest with performance results equal to the rest of the blade. I...

    What Happened?

John, The line will definitely be visible upon final sanding. Does this cause a heat induced stress riser behind this line? Darrin. Please elaborate. I do not wish to ruin my oil.

    Home stabaliztion questions

Disclaimer: I am no expert. However, it seems to me that the issue with antler in particular is the pithy center. While pithy centers are good in Twinkies they are not good on knife handles. I have had good experience with simply removing the pith and replacing the void with marine grade epoxy...

    What Happened?

This was the third knife into the quench using McMaster Carr 9 second oil pre-heated to 120 degrees, using a limiter plate and going in tip first. The first two blades had a consistent and uninterrupted quench line. This blade however came out strangely, with what appears to be an additional...
