    Hydraulic forging press advice

Check out Randy McDaniel's book if you have a chance, it has some good info in it. www.astragalpress.com/Hydraulic_Forging_Press.htm Here is part one of his video: https://youtu.be/pl_A4mRGFZk I like that style press frame, but instead of piecing it together, I planned on using a arrangement...

    Mike Williams Gunstock War Club

That's a amazing club, and the photography really sets it off. Has it been featured on the Contemporary Makers Blog? http://contemporarymakers.blogspot.com/ I think it would fit in well over there.

    Homebuilt power hammers

I have been researching hammers for about a year, and found that the Kinyon air hammer's success determines on the head design, some designs may cause the ram's shaft to bend in certain conditions. The Ray Clontz/Clay Spencer tire hammer from what I have seen is rock solid and scales up or down...

So I guess you can say things are starting to get serious...

The rubber coated wheels were what I was talking about; the regular wheels your dad should be able to make easily. A Freon tank could work, although I would think it a little on the large side compared to the atlas mini-forge that the burner is "from". Most people with the atlas sized forges...

So I guess you can say things are starting to get serious...

Congrats on the B-present. A forge in the atlas size range is great for a ton of projects. What style forge are you thinking of making with it? I have seen pretty good success with that sized burner and the #10 or paint can forges. My one tip for building a KMG is don't skimp on the contact...

Newbie mistake: Why using unknown steels is bad.

Austenite is a phase of iron. I would suggest some light reading/watching. These helped me a lot. https://youtu.be/hw4Rl0uG7ok (two parts) Metallurgy of Steel for Bladesmiths & Others who Heat Treat and Forge Steel by John D. Verhoven Metallurgy for the non-metallurgist and if your...

    Tools and steel

That's the point I was trying to make. With the unknown metals the OP has, and the tools available to him hes in the realm of witchcraft. It is totally different than if he was using a known alloy, had a heat treat oven, ect. Even moving from one file to a similar one could create different...

    Tools and steel

I don't know if this helps, but for my current and more or less first knife project I was asked by a good friend to make a knife specifically out of a old file for him, in a sort of folk art way. I told him off the bat that the knife is only going to be as good as the steel it's made out of and...

    Ferro Cerium Firesteel Flint Rod

I have a couple ferro-rod fire starters and they work well for me. The material itself is pretty tough; I haven't broken one yet but all of the ones I use are at least 1/4 inch dia. A good sized one will last for thousands of strikes. If your planning to buy a rod and make a handle for it I...

    Car rim forge

If you have some sort of tube between the two air ports, I would fill that whole gap in the bottom between the two with either pearlite or vermiculite, or the kitty litter homebrew refractory up to the edge of the rotor, and then use the rest of the area between the outside of the E-brake drum...

    Car rim forge

Take some aluminized HVAC tape, put it over the lug nut holes, then add the kitty litter mix or what ever you plan on using to taper down the rim to just the center hole, covering over the outside lug nut holes in the process. Go to home depot or lowes and buy a few pieces of 1/4" or 3/8" rebar...

Ash dump looks good. As a general rule figure about 10-20 bucks for a 50 pound bag in your area, so figure out about how much your full bucket weighs and base it off that.

    Car rim forge

Soft coal is what you want. Bituminous. Hard coal is Anthracite and is used in home heating, and does not work well for forging. Forge looks good, I would make the ash dump on a hinge like these guys. http://www.accuratepower.com/FrogPondForge/

    Anyone ever tried...

I have a Whitlox style forge that I built (http://whitloxhomestead.com/), and I have done some basic forging running it on seasoned wood, chunk charcoal (Cowboy Charcoal), and coal and it seems to work well on all three. I haven't attempted to forge weld with it, but I have had things melt in...

    I'm back in school....cause I can

Boss: I think that sounds like a great idea with the Tech College. I have worked on/off in my families machine shop for the last 12 years or so and finally got serious into it last year. I have often considered lately going back to school to get "formal training" to hone the skills I...

    farrier file

Hello folks, I hope this thread is not old enough to warrant me starting a new one but I am having a similar issue. I am currently trying to HT a rasp knife using a old Willie-Charlie rasp. My research indicates its from the 40's or 50's and should of been made of decent steel. I saved all of...

    Hello from Delaware

Hello Knifedogs! I have been reading on this forum for a few months now, and am currently in the middle of what I consider my first "real" knife build. This has given me reason to sign up, hoping to get some answers to the things that have me beating my head against the wall, and possibly help...
