    Yeah, it's finished!

Got my vacuum setup finished today and it'll pull 27" under the 9" bell. I'm a happy puppy. Can't wait to start stabilizing handle blanks. Got my hands full with several (too many) projects right now but hope to stabilize some wood in the next few weeks. Ought to work a treat! "Happy days...

    K26 soft brick

Well, it's a bit late now, Drew................I ordered my bricks yesterday before I posted. I'm going to be coating them with a 1" layer of Kast-O-Lite and a coating of Metrikote, so I'm reasonably certain they will work just fine.

    K26 soft brick

Never mind. I found a local source lower than anything I'd found on-line..............plus I can pick it up, so no shipping charges.

Anyone have a "line" on the least expensive supplier of K26 soft brick?

Kerosene as flux for hand welds

Thanks, Ed.................I had no idea. I've never done any forge welding..............especially damascus type work, so it was totally baffling to me why he did that.

Kerosene as flux for hand welds

That's funny, Dennis. I watched that video before bedtime last night. One thing that really shocked me was when he put the hot billet on a block of wood and started hammering on it. Why wood?????

    Buffing wheels

Thanks, Ed. I, too, have always used stitched cotton wheels. Guess I should just stay with them. Appreciate the tip. Glad you are back home now. Keep us all in the "loop" as to how you are doing.

    Buffing wheels

I'm headed to Jantz tomorrow to pick up a bunch of supplies. Want two wheels dedicated to polishing. Have never used sisal wheels before, but have used felt. Which is more recommended for polishing knife blades?

What's going on in your shop?

Well, while not as grandiose as most of you folks endeavors, I finished polishing up and putting the makers mark on 9 wood carving knife blades today. I also got all the handles rough-cut and holes drilled for pins. Next on the schedule is to drive down to Jantz Knife Supply and pick up some...

High Temp K-probe and Digital Thermometer

timegunn, Many thanks for the thorough and experienced answer. Good information for my newbie type questions.

High Temp K-probe and Digital Thermometer

Nope, not for a forge.................it's an oven. Won't be taking it over the Maximum limit of the probe shown on the website.

High Temp K-probe and Digital Thermometer

Thanks, Ken, I looked up Ed's solution. This is for an oven. Clay King ( http://www.clay-king.com/pyrometer.htm ) has a pyrometer with three probes...........two low temp and one high temp...........for $69.88. It's their GM1312 Dual-Input. Looks like a pretty good arrangement to me. I...

High Temp K-probe and Digital Thermometer

Sorry guys, the 3,000 was a typo..............I meant 2,000. I've only three fingers on my left hand which causes a lot of "left-hand" typos. I used to type 90 wpm on a keyboard until the accident, so it's quite frustrating. Anyway..................I'll go to Ed Caffrey's site and see what I...

    Reversing compressor/vacuum pump

I got two vacuum pumps in this "find". One was the Speed-air "combo", and the other a Gould vaned vacuum pump. The Gould pulls 28/29" and will work great. All it needed when I got it was oil. The Speed-air will be kept to use as an airbrush pump for my wood carving. I'll need to hook it up...

    Silicone Sheet

My late Father was a jeweler. He had a Plexiglass dome he used for a vacuum chamber. 10" diameter at the base and 8" tall at the peak. The vacuum pump he used will pull 28/29". Think it'll be a good setup for stabilizing.

    Reversing compressor/vacuum pump

No need for pics. I was just plain not thinkin'. The felt filter on the top of the unit covered a hole where one could screw in an fitting for an inlet. Just didn't catch that it was threaded when I previously took the pump apart. Major DUH!!!!! Problem solved............in spite of my...

    Reversing compressor/vacuum pump

Sounds easy peezy.....................only as I mentioned, I couldn't find any way to do that. Can't see any inlet port.

    Reversing compressor/vacuum pump

I came across a Speed-aire oil-less piston compressor/vacuum pump. Want to use it for my scale stabilizing. Right now it's working like a compressor. Can't figure out how to make it a vacuum pump. Tore it all apart and couldn't see anything inside that indicated it could be reversed. Anyone...
