    Quenching in foil

Hi Walter, How does the cap seal the foil off good enough to keep the air out, is that what the paper wrap is all about? Sound like a neat trick and worth trying ! I have been wrapping 2-3 blades in a over sized packet, snip the tang end of the packet and let the blades drop into the oil, I have...

Most common mistakes that beginners make

James, Very well put !! I too have been doing my own heat treating for twenty years, It's been a huge learning undertaking with big notebooks full of every details of every heat treat ever done in my shop! It's still a struggle when something goes wrong and It usually brings you back to square...

    Didnt get my 60 rockwell.

Hi Tod, To answer your question, I use brownell's tough quench, but It's tricky if your using foil, if your removing the foil before the quench it has to be very fast and no fumbling. Leaving the foil on sounds like it's worth more experimenting for me. It would be great if they made a dip...

    Didnt get my 60 rockwell.

Hi, It sounds like they did not cool fast enough. I usually do one at a time in the plates and let the heat in the kiln recover before doing the next one. I always have better results with an oil quench, like the manufactors suggest. My plates are 2"X6"X12". I would also start over from scratch...

What is the most difficult step of knifemaking for you?

Being A salesman, after all these years I'm still no good at it! Sampson Knifeworks

Most common mistakes that beginners make

Hi Kris, I thought I have some pretty big meat hooks, but apparently there are a lot of guys that have bigger mitts than me! My criteria is trying to make the handle feel good when your holding it with the blade edge up or down and on shorter handles keeping the butt of the knife rounded or...

Most common mistakes that beginners make

I think for me I wasted too many years trying to re-invent the knife ! Taking tried and trued designs and putting your flair to them will come naturally. Give a hundred knife makers the same pattern to build and you will get one hundred different knives! Another one for me was making thick...

    heat

Hello, That sounds close for ATS-34, try 1950 degree's next time or double check your furnace with a separate pyrometer. I think 440c should be in the 1850f to 1900f range with a 300 to 400 degree temper. How did you quench the steel? Sampson Knifeworks

Why can't they make a seemless finishing belt !

I have pretty good luck with a 8" 70 duro wheel getting a finish on the back of my knives, It's the 1" small wheel on my horizontal grinder that's tricky. I do have the light touch and keep moving fast down, but It's still a struggle. Not sure if they can make the small wheels in a softer...

Why can't they make a seemless finishing belt !

Just wondering why they do not have a flexible finish belts that are bump-less? Not sure how much there seam tape costs, but if you could run the seam tape all around the inside of the belt you could eliminate the bump? I would pay more for belts like this, wouldn't you? Maybe they make them and...

What abrasives are you guys using on your disc grinder

Hello, I get the Duro all purpose spray adhesive at wall Mart or my local hardware store. And I think Tracy sells it now, but I'm not sure. Sincerely, Clint Sampson

    Contact wheel outside edge radius?

Thanks Guy's for your input! I do run my abrasives over the edge of the wheel and kill the sharp edges with a smooth round piece of steel, training the belt to curl over the wheel. It seems like a sharp edge of a new wheel will still transfer through a flexible belt the same way a stray grit...

    Contact wheel outside edge radius?

Thanks John! I was kicking around the idea of using a 1/8" radius carbide router bit with a bearing guide, but a little chicken to try it. Before I re-tire my wheel maybe I will experiment! Clint Sampson Sampson Knifeworks
