    Contact wheel outside edge radius?

Hi everybody! I would like to know what other makers are doing with your outside edges of your contact wheels? I have been putting a small radius on mine with a sanding block, but not very precise. Getting ready to have my wheels re-tired @ Sunray Inc. When I call them I'm going to ask them to...

What abrasives are you guys using on your disc grinder

Hi, I use the 9" X 11" silicon carbide paper on mine, either German made or 3m products. mostly do the flats on my blades starting with 120 grit, then going directly to 400 grit. Then the finish is easy to continue with hand sanding. also use the same procedure for the flat radius grind on my...

    Contact wheels ? (poll)

Hi Mike, The 8" wheel I have is a bader with a 5/8" shaft and bearing, serrated. used to be a durometer 70, but its several years old and probably harder by now. SunRay Inc. will re-tire it for reasonable. I will have to blow the dust off and figure what I want for it if your interested? I also...

What's the best way to put a 3/4" hole in a 0.200" thick piece of XHP?

Hello, I do not have a milling machine, but I have used a bi-metal hole saw at slow speed with cutting fluid, well clamped down to cut through ATS-34. It made a pretty clean hole. Probably get one for under twenty bucks and worth a try. Sincerely, Sampson Knifeworks

    Dust collection?

Hello, Those bag type dust collectors are great for dust collection, but they are fire starters waiting to happen when you suck sparks into them!! Noisy too if there inside. I have the grizzly 2hp bag type that I keep in a little box outside my shop, still noisy. I removed the bags and run all...

    Garage/Shop furnace?

Pellet stoves require electricity and I have heard that the hopper motors in them need replacing frequently. If you buy one of the new wood burners before the end of year you can qualify for the energy tax credit and get thirty percent off the stove and installation on this years tax return...

    Garage/Shop furnace?

Hi James, I owned one of those blue flame vent-less propane wall heaters, and would advise against it! It made all of my machines sweat with condensation. I would go with a vented heater system. The overhead infrared propane heaters are vented and heat objects instead of air, several of my...

    G10 peel ply

Halpern titanium & Alpha knife supply both carry the course texture G-10. Dear Crash, you may have the textured stuff already! Sometimes you have to work at getting that protective coating to peel off, thumbnail or a razor blade will help! I like to leave it on until I am almost done with my...

    Contact wheel question

Your right, If I was only going to have one wheel for hollow grinding it would be a smooth one. 8" wheels seem to be the most popular, but that is what comes with most machines standard, must be an economic thing. I use a 12" wheel, my theory is the less flats you have on a blade the less work...

    Contact wheel question

Dear Folks, I have been doing hollow grinding for years and one thing I know is rubber wheels get harder with age. I bought a 50 duro rubber wheel a few years ago and the extra cushioning was nice for awhile, but now this wheel is as hard as everything else I have. I have not used the new poly...

    ATP 641 Anti-scale

Thanks to all for the info! I tried this coating awhile back on ATS-34 and had problems with scale. But after reading your info I was not getting this stuff on thick enough. I have since pulled my jar out of the closet to give it another try! Getting ready to heat treat a kitchen knife made from...

Effectiveness of Acetone/Kerosene and dry ice??

Hello, This is a great thread for anybody doing their own heat treating! I use dry Ice on all my stainless blades and usually get about 1 or 2 points higher rockwell by doing so. This tells me that it does work, but my goal has always been to achieve the manufacturer's full hardness out of the...

    All Things Heat Treating

Hi Mark, Glad I could help in some way! I like to leave 25-30 thousands on edge before heat treat, I found it's much easier to work your blade down and even up the shoulders on hardened steel, More control, that's for hollow grinding anyway. I have used the brownells atp coating in hopes it...

    All Things Heat Treating

Hi Mark, Not sure what your finish is before heat treat? I go to a 120 grit or 220 grit before dipping in turco and return to same grit after heat treat. This removes those light pits pretty easy. I could see if you finished your blades to a finer grit it would be hard to get pass the pitting. I...

    All Things Heat Treating

Hello, I have used turco for many years, I only use it on high carbon steels and Damascus with minor pitting on surface. A thin coat on a clean blade should work. This product works best on steels that heat treat around 1500-1550 degrees F. I have tried it on Ats-34 and other high temp stainless...

    CPM 154 or ATS -34 ?

Hi Tod, I used ATS-34 for years with great results, but the recent supplies of it is not as clean as it used to be, a real pain with surface pits! I switched to the cpm 154 and really like it for finishing & consistant heat treating. Plus it's made in the U.S. and that makes it more sell-able...
