Are there any other teenagers here?

It has been getting more difficult over the three years I have been trying to get into this properly, as I get older I have to spend more of my money on things I "need" instead of knife making and school gets harder so I have less and less time each year.

Are there any other teenagers here?

I guess that means some people know who I am then. Starting young is probably going to give me more time to get good at it.

A non-matching pair of knives WIP.

Sanding is going alright on the blade, getting there slowly. I asked the blacksmith about heat treating the blades and he wanted nothing to do with it. Turns out teenagers and knives being associated at all is frowned on by anyone, even those who make knives themselves. This is getting silly.

    spam

When I was in Austria the last time I ate something called leberkase, which by the way is the pinnacle of culinary advances, it is similar, I am told, to a meat loaf. There was a vegitarian option as well which was the exact same thing but with bits of red and yellow capsicum peppers in it. I...

A non-matching pair of knives WIP.

I knew about all the full bore LE rifles going over but I always thought that the No.8 wasn't sold much. We have them in cadets and were always taught that they were never really sold and remained as a beitish cadet rifle and nothing more. I want to fire a No.3 and a No.1 but I'm sure you know...

I also do not like spam. I might like green eggs and ham but who knows. I only realised recently that it was spiced ham and that just blew my mind. Did Monty Python not do something about spam?

A non-matching pair of knives WIP.

Well that would be my examinations done for the year. Progress might start tonight. I can't get much done tomorrow because I am shooting some lovely old chair legs (Lee-Enfield No.8, bet none of you have ever seen one of those before). This thread is now alive again. I am on my way out the door...

Convex Bevels - are they better? If so, why don't I hear much about them.

I started by filing in a bevel that had a height of around 5/8" on 3mm stock. It was a flat grind which you could do on a grinder. I then used a sanding block to knock of the grind line (mostly done already due to inferior filing skills) and then I used a soft sanding block to round the bevel...

Convex Bevels - are they better? If so, why don't I hear much about them.

Rob, you said what I did in a few lines. I tried to do a flat grind on the knife I am making and it didn't work, I found that a good convex is easier than a good flat grind. I did it freehand with files though and the grind line washed over into a convex by itself.

    Vaquero

It is a nice looking knife and the name sounds kind of Mexican or something. Why does it have two blades? It is a question I can't think of an answer to. The only thing I can think of is so the tool lasts twice as long between sharpening.

First knife needs critique before I start the next one.

I'm going to say that the two things that I noticed first was the blade finish and the grind. You are going to want to use sandpaper like its free and make sure you finish each step of sanding before moving on to the next. The grind I would say you want to push it up higher so the angle is less...

    spam

Would one of those wavy letter things be of any use? I wouldn't mind them when starting a new thread. I can't find the report spam button on the mobile version of the site also.

    Sound off for Memorial Day!

What is Memorial Day? We don't have it here, it sounds like Remembrance Day. US soldiers saved us Brits so at any rate I reckon I should be doing something. How do people pay respect an the like on Memorial Day?

Convex Bevels - are they better? If so, why don't I hear much about them.

You have to remember also that there are more than one kind of convex grind which is good for different things depending on where the bevel starts. From the same thickness of steel a higher grind would be weaker but cuts more easily. There are a lot of people who say that it is only good for...

Are there any other teenagers here?

It never occurred to me until now to try and find people my own age here. There must be more than me. There is a place for old dog knife makers, why not young dog knife makers. I do hope this is the right place.

why do i need a disc sander - educate me

I can't watch the video right now to see if it has been covered but a belt creates a convex surface because the belt swells at the edges of your work. A disk doesn't because it is attached to the thing it is running on.
