    First knife WIP

Ok, question 2... It occurred to me that i should drill my tang for pins, thong tube, and lightening, etc before i cut bevels, as things will be easier to clamp that way. But I'm really not sure how much to drill for weight removal, the blade is about 2" longer than the handle/ricasso area...

    First knife WIP

Thanks, all 3 of you. Wall e, that was kinda my thought, I COULD grind bevels with any of those, but I'd most likely end up with really funky grind lines, which is what I don't want. I'm kinda thinking the file route exactly for the learning reasons. Ed & SMK, thanks on the annealing...

    First knife WIP

Ok, question 1 of what will most likely be many. At this point, I have nothing that resembles a belt grinder. I have a 4.5" angle grinder, a 6" bench grinder, and a 9' bench grinder. I don't feel comfortable trying to grind bevels with any of those, so I'm planning to go the file route. Files...

    First knife WIP

I finally got to cutting metal this morning before work. At least it's a knife shaped object at this point... My calipers seem to have gone missing, but by a ruler the stock is about 7/32" thick. 12" OAL Blade about 7" Actually made from a flat HF pry bar. I know I'm taking a chance on the...

    Car rim forge

Ok, so here's more or less what I did. Pic was taken yesterday, and I've since ground the washer out of the center hole. I'm plugging the lug holes with some short stainless bolts i had laying around, and a grate is under construction. I'm going to fill in between the edge of the rotor and...

    Car rim forge

Thanks for the input, both of you. I actually got a little more done yesterday morning before work, and I think I'm headed down the road of "the automotive monstrosity " forge, and had dug around my garage a bit more before I started, I might have gone a little different from the get-go...

    Car rim forge

Question on the grate. I know normally people just leave the large center hole open, and obviously, that requires a grate. What I did was create sort of an 'air chamber' where the air will feed up through the 6 lug holes, as well as the now roughly 1/2" hole in the center. Do I still need a...

    Friction folder, code name DAG.

Um, havn't tried it on anything yet, but I have a can of something called "speed dip" or something like that down in the garage. It's actually intended for fur trappers to treat traps with. I know the goop in the can is black, and from what I've seen on YouTube, it's sorta a metal dye of...

    Kitchen cutter

Very nice, I especially like the look of the liner stack between the bolsters and scales.

    Car rim forge

When I called the place (Kingston Supply in Latrobe) the guy I talked to said a 5gal bucket weights in at about 60lbs. He said that would be about $4 and change... $150 something a ton. They don't sell it bagged, but he said they have people buy it by the bucket all the time.

    Car rim forge

Well, I got a few minutes yesterday before I had to go to work, and I got a little more work done. Not that much, but progress is progress. And it's raining today, so I'll poke around on here and the rest of the web before work... I did also do a little more research/video watching, and also...

    Car rim forge

Thank you. I've been rolling ideas around in my head about how to do the 'cap' on the ash dump, but I hasn't come up with any thing quite like how they did it. I like their counterweight to keep it closed, very simple, but effective And thanks on the coal thing as well

    Car rim forge

Ok, since I actually started building this, I figured I'd start a new thread, so I could show pics, and get feedback, comments, advice, etc. First off, let me say that I'm building this with the intent of using it primarily to anneal and heat treat, at least as if first get started, though given...

    Anyone ever tried...

Fair enough, I appreciate the reply. I actually got the largest part of the fabrication work done today on my makeshift forge. If I end up trying to use the pellets, I'll try to remember to post how it goes. I'm liking the MYO charcoal idea though, and I'm pretty sure i can scrounge a...

    Anyone ever tried...

I know most are using some sort of propane forge, but I'm a beginner, and honestly gonna use it more for backyard heat-treat and such more than actually trying to forge blades as of yet, and then there's that budget thing... So anyhow, I'm building one out of an old steel car rim I had...

Just right down 30, I'm in Hempfield twp technically, Jeannette zip... Should definitely at least hook up and trade mistake stories at least... My biggest issue is time, I usually work 50+ hrs a week, with a 25 mile commute each way, and its 3pm-early morning usually... so trying to find time...

Ok, been lurking for a little, picking up bits of info where I can and such... I've always been the sort that's got a gift for making things, but that kinda comes naturally when your family are farmers, and builders. Actually, my grandfather was a smith, and now I really wish I had tried to...
