    Epoxy question

All good stuff to know. So those of you who have had knives returned, what do you do? It is possible to re-set the scales? I'd imagine in the least it would require at least a little refinishing of the handle material and tang. But how bad does it get? If the epoxy has come loose and the...

    Epoxy question

In the past I've used both loc-tite and Gorilla glue epoxy just because they've been easy to come by around here. I actually like that they are 5 minute epoxys because I'm usually only working one knife at a time. 5 minutes is plenty of time to stick it together, pin it, and clamp it. Plus, I...

    Epoxy question

What do you guys think of the devcon 2 ton epoxy? EDIT: nevermind...I think I found the answers to that. It's good to know. I think I'll order some gflex right now.

    Burnishing

don't get me wrong....I work hard on the fit and finish of my leather and it's not just thrown together (not that you were implying that..or that I think you did). I think it would be tragic for to send out a great knife with some poorly stitched, not glued, thrown together sheath. I just...

Shreveport Hammer Inn all invited OCT 25 & 26

It's good to know some events like this happen around here. I might actually be able to travel that distance one day. However, I'm not sure I could swing it with only a weeks notice. Give us some pics though! Maybe one day.

    Burnishing

agreed, I just use the grinder because it's quicker for me and doesn't require me to have all those special leather tools. Leather work is not the most fun thing I have to do, and the quicker that thing gets to usable the better, lol. I tell people that want a leather sheath from me....It's...

    Burnishing

I use briwax to finish my leather sheaths...it acts like a top coat that shines and gives it some moisture protection. I finish the edges on a worn out belt being careful not to burn them. Before I finish the leather with the Briwax I lightly dampen the edges. Then take a old piece of blue...

steel arriving bent...err maybe just not straight

Yeah, i've been laying them flat on a large file to see the straightness but haven't tried the ball pien hammer yet. I can get them to move with the rubber mallet, it's just hard to get them to get straight. It seems i get the middle flat but now the ends are curved a little. I work on the...

steel arriving bent...err maybe just not straight

The past few months' steel orders have all arrived....let's just say less than straight. Not bad, but enough that I want to straighten them before the initial bevel grinds. It doesn't matter where I order from. Is this common? As I've not been doing this long, it seems as though the first...

Dewcarta hidden tang WIP (handle only)...

you too? There's nothing better than moving along a good clip and then the universe grinds to a halt as blisters form and you just can't seem to get that last little spot just right....man those are good times! Good WIP btw, thanks!

Another warped blade thread....or is it..?

Thanks George! I guess I'm going to try to beat it back in line. Does bending room temperature annealed steel stress it like it could if if was already hardened?....(I don't really know what I'm talking about here, just making sure it's ok and learning.)

DewCarta new pattern, looking for feedback please.

Oh, I like that a little more than the straight patterns from before. I think you're on to something. EDIT: I would really like to see some colors that are very close....I'm thinking about how you can see a pattern in solid color g10 or micarta... Like black and dark grey. Or natural colors...

Another warped blade thread....or is it..?

I'll certainly be paying more attention to how straight the steel is before grinding anything for sure. But will a little heat affect the annealed steel in an already partially beveled blade to straighten it...or will a good ol hammer to simply try and bend it right now work just fine?

Another warped blade thread....or is it..?

I ordered some 1095 from USAknifemaker. Three 12" lengths. I used 2 of the lengths to make knives already. After the heat treat I noticed they had warped pretty severely, which I found odd because I never seem to have a problem with it especially with stock removal and properly annealed steel...

    Explain how Etching works?

that was my thought as well. As a newer maker myself, I couldn't justify that kind of money and set out to find a cheaper way of doing it. The qtip method works, but it's messy and much harder to get an even etch. This way is cleaner and you can cover the whole stencil at once making it even...

    Explain how Etching works?

Ok, 1. connect 2 9 volt batteries 2. positive lead goes to the knife, negative to the file end (my etching pad) 3. wrap t-shirt piece around the flat of the file one layer thick 4. secure with twist tie 5. squirt just enough solution on pad to make it damp, wet, not dripping. 6. hold pad on...

Dewcarta WIP and a few firsts for me...

Thanks Dewey, but I think you're biased :3: I really like how it's turned out. The Dewcarta is much nicer looking now that it's soaked up some oil and darkened up. The one advice i can give right now for working with the stuff is this: be certain you evenly sand with all the grits up to...

    Explain how Etching works?

I use Ernie's stencils and simply connect 2 9 volt batteries together. It takes a little longer...like 4 or 5, 3 second reps in intervals of 10...but it works. I took the end of a file (the small handle end with just enough of the flat of the file still attached) and attach one alligator lead...
