Finishing grind, belts and grits and whatever else....

Thanks for the thoughts guys. I didn't think about it before, but I was looking at my cork belt just now and I'm pretty sure I've worn this thing slap out. That might have been part of my problem on this last knife I was working on. I think where i've always stopped at 120, i'm gonig to go...

    Selling knives

I started asking for deposits very early on. I got skunked on 2 knives from 2 separate orders back when money from this one meant I could make another one. I'm still on a very tight budget. I tell people that I like to ask for X up front to help cover material costs etc. I then tell them...

Week 10 Photo Contest submissions -- now CLOSED

sorry for gumming up the entry thread with this, but I thought 1000 and 300k was the limit as per the contest rules....I made it 800pixels and I'm now getting "this is not a valid file" when trying to use facebook as a host to upload from a url, then I tried dropbox....it doesn't seem to be...

Week 10 Photo Contest submissions -- now CLOSED

I have attempted to upload a picture but the forum keeps telling me that the file is too big. It's only 233kb and 1000x564 pixels at 96dpi. Is there a problem with the forum at the moment?

    finishing with a forced patina??

I once decided to patina a blade after the fact. I used vinegar after taping up the handles. But the last time I actually used a very light application of cold blue. It worked better than I thought it would and the customer was happy with it.

Finishing grind, belts and grits and whatever else....

I'm about to make a new belt order and I think I'm going to try some stuff I've never tried before. I've watched a bunch of videos on the subject, but I was wondering if anyone would like to share what they use/do. In the past I've done most of the grind with 40grit ceramic belts, then up to...

how to fix bevels and plunge line ?

the scotchbrite belt was actually enough to even it up. I still have some cleanup to do, but Ed's video gave me exactly what I needed. Thanks Ed! And thanks Jim for pointing me in that direction. I just didn't take it far enough the first time and started worrying that it wasn't going to...

how to fix bevels and plunge line ?

I just watched that video, I might try that on this one just to play around with it. But it did kinda answer my question i think. I was more concerned about the double line up at the top of the bevel/plunge. The knife kept wanting to roll or tip in my hand, changing the horizontal angle at...

how to fix bevels and plunge line ?

Something I didn't anticipate when grinding is that the spine of the knife is a continual curve without a flat portion. So when it lays on it's back, it wants to rock. It makes the knife comfortable to hold, but is a booger to grind because it constantly wants to rock and not stay at the same...

Week 9 Photo Contest submissions CLOSED- No Theme - Wide open

I'll get the ball rolling. I don't know what I'll do for next week, hopefully I'll have a new knife finished and a little extra inspiration. There's a little of everything I've learned in the past few weeks in the pic....and until I invest in better equipment, this is about as good as it's...

First Attempt at Etching - Help!

When I first got Earnie's stencils, I burned one up pretty quick...not quite that bad, but pretty quick. He told me to hold for 3 seconds and let up for a few in reps of 10. AFter doing that, they turn out great and the stencils last a while. I use 2 9 volt batteries as a power source and it...

    first file work

That's cool, your paracord wraps look great too! I'm actually working on something similar by request. Without epoxy and another thing to hand sand, it sure does make the build quicker. I hope to finish this up this weekend....

    first file work

Self, just left you a facebook friend request. I think we've been making knives about the same amount of time. I'm still pretty rookieish too. A lot of your stuff doesn't have handles. I wouldn't charge as much for cord wrapped handles, it's just not as time consuming. I'm sure you know...
