Want to make yourself a 2 blade trapper?

Been following along Don, great tutorial. Thanks for sharing info that's tough to come by. I'll wreck some materials someday trying your design, but for now looking forward to seeing how it finishes up. Take care, Craig

    bought a used anvil square

I'm good for now with my Sea Robin, but I think it's a great idea to do a post anvil build project. I think many folks will get a lot of mileage out of the info. There's a lot to be said about having the bulk of the mass of an anvil directly below the work surface. It'd be interesting to see...

    bought a used anvil square

Looks (?) like a 'Sea Robin'. If so, the steel and heat treating are excellent. Supposedly, the fellow picked up the long square bars on auction from a munitions plant, and even put out a detailed video of how he made them. He sold them for a while and just ran out of material a couple of years...

    Plistix versus ITC-100....my findings

ITC-100 works well in my small (nonwelding) forge. The interior is about 4 1/2" by 10" with just one inch of inswool and maybe a quarter inch of satanite. The interior starts a partial glow within seconds and is ready to go within ten minutes. I get twelve hours of running time off of four...

    Bevel grinding advice needed

Just wondering, does your work rest deflect a little particularly out on the right side. Not picking on your equipment at all. The jigged hollow grinds that I've seen are usually ruler straight. Just wondering if that might be part of that slight wave in the grind line before it gets to the...

    Bevel grinding advice needed

If you're using a jig, the edge might look like it gets thicker and thinner. Scribe a set of parallel lines on the edge and grind evenly to them, the rest of the grind on the blade should follow where it may and be ok. But...the folks north of this note are giving you great grinding advise...

    90 to 1 gear reduction

Tough to tell from the pics, but the hp rating would be important. Pure guess here, but if the output shaft is less than 1 1/8" diameter, it may be designed for less than 1 hp input. Good luck with the build, Craig

    new forging presses

Hey Del, Sorry about that. I figured Jim wouldn't be too tickled about someone thinking he should grind off his new die racks:biggrin:. Look'in good Jim, Craig

    new forging presses

Hi Jim, I see some splatter or rough edges sticking out on the sides that you might want to grind off before you paint up the new press. Have you figured out yet how you're going to store your dies.:les::lol: Thanks for the updates, Craig

    Help toubleshooting hamon attempt

Hi Josh, I'd consider running the same process as your second try, but I'd try a wash coat that's much thinner, as in you're seeing more steel than coat. I'd also try clay that might appear only a third as thick as it seems to be in the pictures. Just guessing out loud, good luck with it. It's...

    Help toubleshooting hamon attempt

Hi Josh, Thanks for the follow up pic. Yup, it appears (?) that only a little of the edge hardened and that the clay didn't seem to influence the area that hardened. Just a guess, but if I saw that, I'd figure that the blade was not picking up enough heat to harden. I'd try bumping the temp...

    Help toubleshooting hamon attempt

If that white, cloudy area is where the clay was placed, it seems like it worked out really well. You maybe running the clay thicker and farther down the blade than you might need to. I'd try less clay, farther up, with a more irregular design. You have nice control over your process. There's...

Adding a blower to a forge....

Hi Rex, I think you've gotten great advice. I'm glad you can do something with your original supplies, just hate to see stuff go to waist. I think those venturi burners have a lot of guts in them that just isn't needed on a blown burner. He might be able to tell much better, but I think Ed's...
