    Pinstripes

I like those... and Maple is a sweet wood when you get a lively piece like that. That streaked/antiqued look is really nice.

    Hunter order

Ray - you've got it - whatever "it" is - but where's the damn ABS ricasso <kidding!><just kidding!> Seriously: Every time I see one of your knives the back of my brain yells "that's what it's *supposed* to be!" And I don't know anybody else who can get a temper line on 5160 - no bullsh!t <grin>

    Wood as a handle?

A year ago I did a test on cherry and oak blocks glued to 5160 sanded to 400 (if memory serves) and glued with Loctite E120-HP. I treated blocks of cherry and oak in a variety of ways from Tru-Oil to plain safflower oil...

    The One brick forge?????

... and get yourself more than a single brick while you are at it. At least in my damp climate the bricks fracture after a few uses. Bailing wire will hold 'em together. They work well for small/medium pieces. Great way to get started - - - and to have a portable setup to demo at some event (a...

Let us know if you want a "basics of heat treating" set of posts from Cashen

I always appreciate Kevin's posts. If Kevin writes it - I will read! (voraciously) FWIW - I have his web page on the subject bookmarked: http://www.cashenblades.com/heattreatment.html which has links to pages like this: http://www.cashenblades.com/metallurgy.html

    Finally have a website!

Nice site! easy navigation. I'd put asking prices on the available knives, but that's just me. The layout and navigation are great (as are the knives)!

    Epoxy question

Yep - though lots of folks use it, I also read the post where a mastersmith was told by the manufacturer that the standard retail epoxies have a 5 year bond life. Here's a couple of thread links on the subject - be aware that some epoxies require a special di$pen$or that you buy $eparately...

    question for a beginner?

Wayne Goddard does light peening - I put his advice into a 5160 Club newsletter <rummage rummage rummage> Ah - here it is - Page 2: http://www.elementalforge.com/5160Club/201101Newsletter.pdf (report from our December meeting last year - - - which was a pretty short meeting by our standards!)

    Where to buy ferric chloride

Hmmm - place I bought powder from no longer sells it - so that got me curious - I see Jantz Supply has some liquid. Some place called Science Company sells powder. For what that's worth.

    Dumbfounded

+1 on all the above. And don't get in a twist about forged versus stock removal. Now I happen to love fire, hot steel, hammer & anvil, but seriously - you would destroy many of the excellent high alloy knife steels with forging - stock removal is what those steels are made for. Your neighbor may...

    Tracking Advice Needed

Jerry - if the shim doesn't reel in the belt wobble, what helped me (I am NOT a machinist) was to put several wraps of blue tape on the tension wheel to build up the middle slightly fatter than the sides. I suppose this might stretch the center of the belts but I have not noticed a problem with...

    Drawing a Bowie blade?

I've found that tracing over a photo of a "pretty close" knife helps too. I was trying to sketch out a kukri design for a cousin and just COULD NOT get the curves right... until I pulled up some photos on-line - put them in a photo-tweaking program - blew them up to full size - printed them out...

What colors or grits Rouge should I use?

Just be double cautious with that buffing wheel. I've seen a couple of people's injuries from knives flung back at them by the buffing wheel - and have heard more stories. If that nice fluffy buffing wheel catches your blade it will fling it out at high speed. Just sayin'.

    suggestions on a respirator.

Ed & Mike - I'm using 3M 2091 (particulate & lead) filters - rattle my cage if you think that's not adequate. Correction: the link I posted is not /exactly/ the full face 3M I'm using but it's close (I've got the 3M-6898 model). I'll re-emphasize that when I went around to industrial safety...

    suggestions on a respirator.

I have to say something: It's not just your lungs, it's your eyes too. I was wearing a respirator and goggles, but the goggles didn't sit tight on my nose where the respirator hit 'em. Piece of grinder grit bounced into my right eye socket. For a couple of weeks I kept thinking I'd washed it...

    Strongest Epoxy On The Planet

In that "Wood in the Kitchen" test that I did, I was focused on treatments for the wood - but decided to see how Loctite E-120HP would do. E-120HP al$o require$ a $pecial plunger/applicator $eparate from the glue tube. I ground the 5160 bars to maybe 400 grit? and cleaned them with acetone...

    Fitting a guard before etching

... back when Mt. St. Helens blew, I worked for a trucking Co. that got contracts hauling equipment in & out of the Toutle River valley. That volcanic dust went right through the air filters and honed out the cylinders = expensive upkeep. Somehow someone figured out that a particular L'Eggs...
