Hearing and Eye Protection

So, what are you guys using? Up until now, I have utilized SureFire's Sonic Defenders and a few of the combat ear plugs that I had left over from my days in Iraq... for eye protection, the always great full face shield. Recently, the face shield has become a bit of a bother since changing my face mask filters from dust and aerosol to Organic Vapor filters. I've tried out using a few different types of eye protection and have yet to find anything comfortable enough to keep me from reverting to my old arrangement. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Goggles are always a good choice, although they do not offer face protection. If your looking at goggles, I think you would be happy with the Uvex brand sold in safety supply houses and welding supply stores. Im a Safety Mgr for my company and highly reccomend them.

God Bless
Mike

Sometimes when I grind handles, I get the dust coming back around my safety glasses. So I switched to Jackson Wildcat foam sealed googles and I've been happy with them. They're about 20 bucks.

I keep a box of disposable ear plugs in each of my two shops. My personal favorite are Moldex "Spark Plugs". I've become so used to having them in, that any time I try to do something without them, the equipment doesn't sound "right".

Eye protection is a MUST. Whatever you use, fitting close to the face is the best idea....that will help eliminate those stray grits/swarf that often times "jump" around the glasses and into your eyes. As I get older, I have found the need for magnifying lenses in my safety glasses. I purchase mine at the local welding store, and am currently using 1.50s. I've tried using the "bi-focal" safety glasses, but all I get out of them is a woozy feeling, and a headache from my eyes constantly trying to re-focus.
(this getting old stuff is for the birds!) :)

Eeeeeeeeeeeeh whats that your saying sonny!

I lost my hearing a long time ago. But I grew up in the age when doing construction without protection was the norm, especially when working for small companies. The hearing loss is gradual and it is permanent, as so it the vision. My vision loss is due to old age but I learned after having steel picked out of my eyes not to do anything without eye protection. I wear hearing protection but it is too little to late! I personally like the muffs more than anything! I wear glasses because without them them I can't see to work fine work. Also like Ed I can't wear the safety bifocal glasses even though I have tried!

My friend when it is gone it is gone so have hearing and eye protection everywhere and make it like religion, don''t go anywhere without it! One thing I hve found if it's not handy you won't use it and if it's not comfortable you won't use it so if you don't use it it's not doing you any good!

KISS keep it simple stupid, make sure the protection is comfortable and where you can lay your hands on it before you start!

Give it time Ed lol you ll be using 1.75 or 2 pretty soon . I dont use ear plugs I have tinitus in my right ear so bad it doesnt matter. Running heavy equipement 25 years with out hearing protection provided by CP rail for my first 15 years pretty much made me deaf .But I do believe it needs to be worn for some one who isnt with my problem . I do wear a model 6800 3M fullface mask . Its a must in my shop. kellyw
