    An Odd One

A guy at work has been bugging me to let him come over and pound a knife out of a 52100 ball bearing he had laying around. He comes over and shows me his pattern. I break out into what Pat McMnanus calls the stationary panic. I start running in place pumping my arms. I did'nt want to tell him...

    Plistix versus ITC-100....my findings

Ed, I was waiting for your results. They match mine. Last fall I rebuilt one forge, and built a seperate welding forge, and used plistix. I could not get over 2150, so I coated over the plistix with the ITC 100. No problem now. I know this wasn't exactly a sientific test, but I know what works...

    Mizzou refractory in the Northwest??

Jeff, Last time I was down there, about a month ago, they still were not carrying any pourable refactory. I've been on them for about ten years to carry some, but I must be the only one. They do carry carry soft brick, kiln cement, ITC 100, and some other usefull stuff like analog pyrometers.

    Mizzou refractory in the Northwest??

Those kiln shelves make very nice forge floors. They're fairly expensive, but if you have a local pottry supplier they probably have some broken ones at a discount. Just cut to fit. Don't use them in your welding forge. They just melt away under Borax.

    Forging vs. grinding

Sounds like you want to drop forge which you are familiar with at Craftsman tools. Henckels drop forges their knives. Now you are talking very large and expensive equipment. I have seen have seen them home made. They are built like a guillotine, but I'm no sure how they raise the hammer, or trip...

    My Experiment With Super Quench

Just for the heck of it I beat out a railroad spike knife of the high carbon type. From what I understand that means .30-.40 carbon. For the Super Quench I used one gallon of water, 1lb. of salt, 4 oz. of Dawn dish soap, & 4 oz. of Basic H2. before starting I ran a file across the edge to...

    Forging vs. grinding

The press itself is pretty quiet. It's the whine of the Hydraulic pump that can be pretty loud. The book you need on building a press is on the American Bladesmith web site. It's by James Batson. It is complete clear down to part drawings, and part numbers. Also search "Damascus" on you tube and...

    Forging vs. grinding

Bobby, A good book that covers forging, and grinding, "How To Make Knives" by Richard Barney, Bob Loveless, & Bill Moran. It would take a pretty big press to press out an entire blade in one shot. Most knife presses are around 25-35 ton capacity, and the dies used for drawing are only about...

    New Mill and Milling Station

I think this is going to run smoother than you think. You don't want any cushion. You want it as rigid as possible. I would maybe put a sheet of steel between the mill, and the bench top mostly as kind of a drip pan. Make it easier to clean up cutting fluid, tapping fluid, WD 40, or whatever...
