Over the years of trying different buffs, I finally settled on the idea that the correct buffing wheel depends on the compound and the intended purpose for the buffing wheel.
I only use two different compounds... Matchless green for guard material, and Pink No-Scratch for handles.
I use 8" buffs on a 1hp/1800 rpm buffer. I have two sewn muslin wheels stacked on the arbor for the Matchless green compound, and for the Pink No-Scratch, I have a loose buff stacked with a sewn (both muslin). The loose buff is located on the inside (towards the motor). This setup allows me to use the loose edge of the buff for radiused surfaces, and when I need to get into tighter areas, I just go to the sewn side of the same buffing wheel.
